Help a loved one ‘declutter’ with Declutterfly

From having too much stuff in a filing cabinet to not being able to move in a home, Clutter can take over lives.

Years of life can lead to the accumulation of more belongings than people know what to do with. For nearly her entire life, Kathy Boyd, of Vancouver, has been organizing and “decluttering” the homes of her friends and family. Recently, she decided to make a business out of it and help out the community.

“My mom is a hoarder so when she moved to a manufactured home in Arizona, I had to get rid of a lot of stuff,” Boyd said.

Her business, Declutterfly, takes care of the downsizing and organizing process as much as possible.

“I start by talking with them about how we should go about decluttering,” she said.

Declutterfly will help reorganize, set up a moving truck and even work with a realtor to sell property, she said.

For her “senior downsizing” program, Boyd works with seniors or the offspring of seniors to create a moving plan and tackle the space together. She said she can help a child deal with a large amount of items after their parent has moved as well.

“Sometimes the parent has already moved into a nursing home and the child needs help dealing with the stuff,” she said.

Part of the program includes touring the space, creating an action plan and helping move, all at the client’s own pace.

“I can also be there on the day of moving to help out in any way I can,” she said, noting that the moving process can be stressful. “I can go in as a third party and help decide what things to get rid of.”

She knows a lot of items in a home have an emotional attachment and are harder to get rid of.

Boyd also explained how she can be a benefit to the kids of people with too much stuff. She said a lot of the time, kids do not understand why a parent “just can’t get rid of it.”

While Boyd says she will never make a person get rid of an item, she will talk it through with them in an attempt to help them downsize.

“I talk with clients about how they feel,” she said.

Boyd said her favorite part about helping people declutter is the how the clients feel after working with her to downsize.

“Some of my clients call me a rockstar,” she said.

Along with senior downsizing, Boyd works with small businesses to get them organized for a more successful future.

“I used to do bookkeeping so I work with businesses to get their files organized,” she said. “I get them ready for tax time.”

Boyd currently serves many clients in the Clark County area. If you are interested in scheduling a free consultation, visit declutterflypdx.com or call or email Kathy at (503) 914-8409 or kathy@declutterflypdx.com.
