95 year old serves as flower girl for great-granddaughter

When her great-granddaughter, Julia Bruce (formerly Julia Rothe), asked her to be a flower girl in her wedding, Fern Glass, 95, said with a delighted chuckle, “Yes, of course!”

Fern lives in Alabama with two of her children the majority of the time, but spends a portion of every year living in Battle Ground with one of her daughters.

Fern has always lived life to its fullest, never wanting to miss an opportunity for a new adventure.

This mutual character trait created a strong, generational bond between the bride, who grew up in Battle Ground, and her great-grandmother.

With laughter and smiles, Fern looked forward to the day she would be her great-granddaughter’s flower girl. She shared this exciting news with anyone who would stop to chat with her, whether friend or stranger.

When she flew from Alabama to Washington for the wedding, she shared with total strangers — a person who pushed her in her wheelchair, passengers sitting next to her in the terminal and on the plane — how excited she was to have the opportunity to be a flower girl in her great-granddaughter’s wedding. The only other time she was in a wedding was as a bride.

With eager expectation, she enjoyed each delightful moment with all the preparations, dress fittings and rehearsing.

Every day before the wedding she looked forward to new experiences like helping design her matching flower girl hair garland, decorating her walker with tulle, and dancing with the other flower girls in the Bridal Suite.

On May 20, in Olympia, her flower girl role was achieved as she preceded the bride down the aisle, accompanied by her 2-year-old great-great-granddaughter and her 10-year-old great-granddaughter.

“This is a new experience for me and I’m having so much fun,” Fern said during the reception.

There is no doubt — Fern will remember and cherish these precious moments of her well-lived life.

Her family and friends wish her many more adventure-filled years
