Shopping local in the community

On the corner of East 16th Street and Broadway in Vancouver is Not Too Shabby, a shop dedicated to shopping local, supporting small businesses and old school customer service.

The shop, located at 1515 Broadway St., offers local gifts, clothing and cards of all shapes and sizes.

“I try to focus on smaller companies, what I like to call ‘companies with a face,’” owner of Not Too Shabby Reshell Douglas said. “They’re either women-owned companies or they’re smaller businesses, family owned businesses or they are cause oriented (and) they give proceeds from their profits to some sort of charitable focus.”

One of the companies Douglas shows off in her shop is Shift Accessories, a jewelry company in the Pacific Northwest with items such as bigfoot necklaces. Other aspects of the store include a section of stationary and unique cards and other small gifts.

“I try to curate my store to have unique things that you won’t find anywhere else,” she said.

Along with Shift and other local companies, Not Too Shabby carries women’s clothing for all ages.

“I carry women’s clothing, (that is) what I like to say ‘ageless,’” she said. “My clients are anywhere from 16 year olds to 85 year olds.”

Douglas, a graduate of Battle Ground High School, opened up Not Too Shabby in a location near the Columbia River in August 2000, just about 20 years ago. Since then, she has moved locations a few times and landed at the location on Broadway in 2011, a location that runs in the family.

“My family owned a bridal salon at this location in the 90s,” Douglas said. “Now my business is here and I am not moving.”

Douglas said she has always had an eye for style and would spend her childhood organizing items on shelves and helping out in her families bridal shop.

“It (fashion and style) was natural and I grew up in the service-oriented retail business,” she said. “Opening a store just seemed like a natural direction.”

Because of this service-oriented background, Douglas said she likes to have what she calls “old school customer service.”

“The customers are clients, family and friends,” she said. “I just want everyone to come in here and feel warm and fuzzy.”

Along with making customers feel like they’re at home, Not Too Shabby offers complimentary gift wrapping all year.

“I think my main focus, not only of curating a store with unique items, is customer service,” she said.

Douglas said the love she has for her clients is well received and she sees it reciprocated back to her.

“Over the 20 years, people have been very loyal to us. They always come in here and always make sure they buy gifts here,” she said. “I really feel the love when people come in here because they go out of their way to buy local.”

Not Too Shabby is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays with extended hours on both Nov. 29 and Nov. 30 for Black Friday and Small Business Saturday. Along with extra hours, Douglas said the store plans to have discounted items over the weekend as well as a deal on gift cards.

“For every $100 you spend on gift cards, you’ll get $20 extra,” she said.

After November, the store will also open up on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
