WANTED! Young mutton busters

Posted

Mutton busting is coming to the Vancouver Rodeo, and busters are wanted.

Mutton busters are young bull riders, but with sheep. Many say it’s a great opportunity for kids to kick up their heels and test out their skills to see if the sport is in their future. The Vancouver Rodeo is taking signups for young cowboys and cowgirls.

Riders must be 50 pounds or lighter and age 8 or younger. Each kid will get slotted to ride on either day one, two or three of the rodeo, June 30 to July 2. Those signing up earliest will get to pick which day they want to compete. To sign up call event organizer Cindy Larson at 360-907-2869 or email her at larsoncindyl@aol.com. Entering is free.

“People come to the rodeo just to see this,” Larson said. “It’s better than any other events.”

Each day about 10 mutton busters will get their chance to shine and the top three from each day will move on to the Championships on July 3.

The Vancouver Rodeo is also seeking pee-wee barrel riders who will compete on July 3. Pee-wee barrel riders must be 10 years or younger. Interested participants for this event can also contact Larson.

Winners of the mutton busting and the pee-wee barrel riders will each receive a bicycle.
