Area roofing company participates in No Roof Left Behind

Just a couple of years after starting their own roofing company, the team at Legit Roofing was made aware of a program called No Roof Left Behind. After contacting the program coordinators and finding out some more details, Legit Roofing became involved in the program right away.

“We contacted them (No Roof Left Behind) last year and got involved right away,” said Chris O’Brien, general manager of Legit Roofing. “The program has been in Vancouver for over five years, but no contractor had been willing to take on the program. We’ve only been in business about five years, and good business is really going to reflect on our reputation. That’s one of the reasons we chose No Roof Left Behind.”

According to the No Roof Left Behind website, www.noroofleftbehind.com, this is a nationwide program that gives people in the community a way to help their neighbors who have fallen on hard times. The program provides a local contractor with the framework to provide a new roof at no cost to a deserving homeowner in need.

No Roof Left behind relies on local contractors to donate their time and services to provide a new roof at no cost to a deserving homeowner in their service area. National sponsors, including GAF Materials Corporation, Raindrop Gutter Guard and Allied Building Materials provide materials on all No Roof Left Behind installations.

Last year, the winning nominee in the Clark County area who received a new roof from Legit Roofing was the family of Xavier Quiroz. With a family of seven (two adults and five children), Quiroz was laid off in 2011 at the age of 60. As it became increasingly difficult for Quiroz to find work, the family’s plans for a new roof at that time were put on hold.

The family struggled to put their children through college and were barely able to maintain their home, vehicles, food on their table, diabetic medications and clothing. Quiroz was then diagnosed with cancer and needed to have surgery. All the while, the family’s roof had developed several leaks that caused damage to the interior of their home.

Last June, because of the No Roof Left Behind program, the Quiroz family was able to have a few roof installed by Legit Roofing.

“We give them (the winner) a completely new roof,” O’Brien said. “If they need plywood, we get them that. It’s a 50-year, non-prorated roof. If they need gutters, we’ll replace the gutters. Any rot or anything, we’ll replace that. Last year we threw a big neighborhood barbecue type party and all the close neighbors and some friends came to that, and that went on while we were installing the roof.”

Legit Roofing is again participating in the No Roof Left Behind program again this year, and they are currently accepting nominations. To nominate a deserving family, anyone can go to Legit Roofing’s website, www.legitroofing.com, click on the “Free Roof” tab up at the top, click on “Current Program” in the center of the page and then click on the red button inside the box that says “Click Here To Nominate.”

Legit Roofing will continue to accept nominations until April 25. Then from April 26-May 22, David Hazelton, owner of Legit Roofing, and O’Brien will review the nominees and will select a number of finalists. Voting for the winner will take place from May 23-July 25, and the winner will tentatively be announced Aug. 1.

Nominees should be families or anyone who may be in need of a new roof, but can’t afford it for one reason or another. For example, O’Brien said some of the nominees last year included a woman whose husband passed away suddenly and she become a single mother of two with no income, another woman who worked with the special olympics and had some special needs children at home and others.

“The struggle we have is getting nominations and getting the word out there,” O’Brien said. “Last year, we only received about 10 nominations. We narrowed it down to three finalists and then we only received about 400 votes for the winner. It would be nice to have more notice from the community about these people who may need a roof. Currently we only have one nomination so far this year.”
