First of nine household Recycling Day events set

Posted

Clark County residents will have ample opportunity to safely dispose of household hazardous waste and other materials during nine free collection events.

Residents can drop off household hazardous waste, including pesticides, paints, solvents, thinners, motor oils and cleaners. Block foam, electronic equipment, old tires without rims, refrigerators, freezers, air conditioning units and scrap metal also will be accepted.

In addition, each event will partner with local food banks to collect nonperishable food donations.

The first 2015 Recycling Day Event is Sat., April 11, in Yacolt. Five more events this spring and three events next fall will be in different communities, providing convenient recycling for items that cannot be picked up at curbside.

This year’s Recycling Day Events are scheduled for:

  • April 11, Yacolt Primary School, 406 W. Yacolt Road
  • April 18, Camas Public Works, 1620 S.E. Eighth St.
  • April 25, 5901 S. 11th St., Ridgefield
  • May 2, Holley Park, 1000 E. Fourth St., La Center
  • May 16, Washougal Transfer Station, 4020 S. Grant St.
  • May 30, Columbia River High School, 800 N.W. 99th St.
  • Sept. 12, Clark College (Yellow Lot 1), 1900 Fort Vancouver Way
  • Sept. 19, Fisher’s Landing Transit Center, 3510 S.E. 164th Ave.
  • Oct. 3, Battle Ground High School, 300 W. Main St. (enter on North Parkway Avenue)

All events will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., except the Yacolt event will end at 2 p.m.

Collection events at schools are not sponsored or endorsed by the school districts.

Green Neighbors, a Clark County Environmental Services program, will sponsor the events in partnership with local cities and the town of Yacolt. A Washington State Department of Ecology grant provides funding.

“In 2014, the county collected 195 tons of hazardous waste and other materials from nearly 3,000 residents,” said Don Benton, Environmental Services director. “In addition, 2,945 pounds of food were donated to local food banks. Clark County is proud to coordinate a program that helps our community in so many different ways.”

Recycling Day Events are open to all Clark County residents. Proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or other identification with address, may be required. No business waste will be accepted.

Participants are limited to five tires per person per day. Some events will provide shredding for a limited amount of paper. Some cities may accept additional items at their events. Visit ClarkGreenNeighbors.org/recyclingday for more information.
