Woodland preschool gets donated cabinets

Teacher Jen Ikerd has gotten pretty good at finding places for all the things she and her preschool students need.

Books, art supplies and even Ikerd’s teaching materials all need a home in her portable classroom at Woodland Co-op Preschool. That’s become a little easier since Hayes Cabinets of Woodland donated cabinets and countertops for the kitchen space in Ikerd’s room.

“It was a great blessing,” she said. “They had a guy come in and look at our kitchen area and say what would fit the space. Then they showed up with two trucks and three guys, one of whom stayed half the day to install everything.”

The donation involved a conversation Iderd had last spring at graduation with Hayes Cabinets’ plant manager Ryan Swanberg, whose daughter used to attend the preschool.

“He introduced himself and said their company wanted to give back to the community,” Ikerd explained. “It was fabulous for them to take the initiative and put something new in our classroom. This was an amazing and generous gift.”

She added that the cabinets will keep even small things such as arts and crafts stickers in an easy-to-find location along with other items “that fourth graders can’t do without,” Ikerd said.

Woodland Co-op Preschool is a nonprofit organization that has about 44 preschool students each year.

Hayes Cabinets has been in business for more than 40 years and has won several honors during that time, including a service award from Angie’s List. The company also won Best of Show in 2012 for its Street of Dreams Home, and the firm also won Best Kitchen at the Clark County Parade of Homes the same year.

At the 2013 Clark County Parade of Homes, “The Nantucket” home that featured Hayes cabinetry won five of eight awards, including Best of Show and Best Kitchen.

Also in 2013, Hayes Cabinet’s designer David Hallsted worked with certified master kitchen and bath designer Rhonda Knoche to win third place out of 500 entries in the design competition sponsored by the National Kitchen and Bath Association.

Hayes Cabinets has a green approach, too, as evidenced by the company’s certification from the Environmental Stewardship Program.

The company is located at 660 Mitchell Ave. in Woodland. Hours are 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. More information is available by calling (360) 225-8275 or going online at www.hayescabinetsinc.com.
