Interior design is ever changing

As long as you’re aware of your surroundings, you can detect fads without much trouble. It’s not too difficult to notice what hip new clothes people are wearing, or popular new cars are being driven. As long as you’re out and about you’ll naturally notice new style.

When it comes to home interiors though, picking up on what’s “hot” isn’t as easy. After all, how many different homes do you enter beside your own on a weekly basis?

At Creative Interiors and Design in Brush Prairie, in-style room layouts, furniture and home decorations can be observed. The two-story building at 11815 Northeast 113th Street is packed with display rooms. Tracey Ashdown, an interior designer for the company, said trends in the industry are constantly changing and recently the store put together a few new displays deemed to be atop the trend-chain.

According to Ashdown, sheep and alpaca fur items are at a high premium for buyers right now. Across the store there are seemingly endless furry blankets, pillows and rugs, for example.

“Forever it seemed like everyone was so into cowhides, but now it seems to have shifted to these furs,” Ashdown said.

Ashdown believes such fur items have risen so high in the market because — for one — they’re flashy, but more importantly they provide an inviting texture.

“People can’t keep their hands off them right now,” Ashdown said. “They’re selling like hotcakes.”

Creative Interiors and Design co-owner Heidi Townsend said color-wise the interior design industry has been stuck in a neutral color scheme trend for quite awhile, but that is changing.

“Color is coming back with a vengeance,” Townsend said. “People are getting tired of grey and white color schemes.”

At the store, Ashdown said one of the room displays features a blue couch which she describes as “nice to see back.”

“I don’t know how long it’s been since we had a blue couch,” Ashdown said. “It just makes you feel more happy to have color, I’m a huge fan of this trend.”

Other colors that Ashdown said are on the rise are black and gold — especially with decorative pieces. Several such decorative pieces were recently on display at the annual Parade of Homes in Clark County. She said with the parade over, those items now exist for sale at the store.

“Anyone who went to the parade this year and thought ‘Oh, that looks cool,’ should come by and see if we have it,” said Ashdown.

Most display rooms at Creative Interiors and Design are great rooms, but bedrooms and dining areas are also viewable. Ashdown said when it comes to dining spaces, design is becoming less traditional.

“People just aren’t doing formal dining rooms as much anymore,” she said.

Ashdown said live edges — which are edges that look like they were cut with an axe and aren’t necessarily smooth — are also a growing fad for tables and chairs.
