Reputable flooring, countertop business opens Battle Ground storefront

As another nod to the growth that Battle Ground is experiencing, Floor Connections opened during April on Main Street in Old Town.

Taking over a former dental office in a stand-alone building across from Central Park, owner Jason Aw invested over $20,000 in renovations to customize the space for his needs. Stepping inside, customers are greeted by 1,200 square feet of flooring and countertop samples.

With commercial clients that include Starbuck’s, Red Robin and Walmart, Aw has built for himself a reputation of integrity that paints a broad stroke from commercial to residential customers.

Aw’s career switch into flooring was more an accident than a calculated plan. He previously spent time on the property management side of business, including remodeling and renting out homes. His experience installing flooring, in addition to a myriad of other handyman skills, gave him the right skill set when the opportunity came along to change gears.

Drawing from his previous experience installing flooring and working with contractors, Aw is able to provide even greater value to customers now as a store owner. Floor Connections officially employs five people but Aw’s team includes a trusted and reliable network of subcontractors that specialize in flooring, countertop and tile installation.

A Vancouver resident for 20 years, Aw opened Floor Connections six years ago in Portland. He later moved it to the Cascade Park neighborhood and, when his lease came up for renewal there, customers and contractors encouraged him to look into relocating to the Battle Ground area.

Aw said, “I looked at other places. They didn’t feel good. In Battle Ground, it’s more friendly, not like the city that is more hustle and bustle.”

Flooring and more

Floor Connections offers carpeting as well as hardwood and laminate flooring and luxury vinyl tiles and plank. The business is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment on Saturdays.

Luxury vinyl plank (or LVP) is a popular flooring choice for its ease of installation, durability and waterproof component. With the evolution of LVP since it was first introduced, it now runs the gamut of characteristics including stone, wood, and modern and traditional patterns. It also comes in tile form to lend more than a strip or plank look to flooring designs.

As previously eluded to, Floor Connections goes beyond flooring. A large selection of tile comes in several finishes like ceramic, porcelain and stone. These options allow homeowners or businesses to add distinctive looks to floors, countertops, walls, and backsplashes. Setting his customers at ease, Aw recommends contractors that are considered industry craftsmen for the installation of these surfaces, which can be great DIY projects for those who have the time and know-how and unnecessary stress for clients who possess neither.

Custom choices increase with the line of quartz and granite countertops that Aw continues to expand on. In fact, in an outdoor space that once was fenced off, he plans to haul away the remaining dirt and construct an attractive all-weather showroom to display ceramic and porcelain tiles as well as granite slabs over seven feet long. This will give shoppers a practical visual when choosing statement-making surfaces.

In addition to a couple of parking spots in front of Floor Connections, there is room for 12 more cars behind the store. Aw is thinking of utilizing this area once or twice in the coming summer months to hold a remnants sale, similar to a garage sale but with sizes or lots of material too small to be sold for large projects.
