Pleasant Valley Primary art teacher Barb Holterman has been named the 2019 Elementary Art Educator of the Year by the Washington Art Education Association (WAEA). The award is given to teachers that go above and beyond as well as those who promote the arts.

Holterman has been with Battle Ground Public Schools for 14 years and is a National Board Certified Teacher.

“Student engagement is a huge part of what I do,” Holterman said in a press release. “Giving my students the opportunity to drive their own learning and helping them reach the next level has given me great joy, and I love coming to school every day just to see what they will do next.”

Holterman was nominated by Cynthia Gaub, a visual art educator at North Middle School in Everett and past president of WAEA.

“Barb is an enthusiastic educator who is always looking for new ways to engage her students,” Gaub said in the release. “Her passion for art education is infectious, and she’s taken proactive steps to be a leader amongst her peers.”

Holterman will receive this award at a WAEA gala event in Leavenworth in November 1. Because of the award, Holterman will become eligible for future nominations for regional and national recognition.
