“ENERGY, CLIMATE AND DEMOCRACY in Washington State,” a free event/lecture, will be held Tue., April 12, 6-7:30 p.m., at WSU Vancouver, Dengerink Administration Building, Room 110, 14204 NE Salmon Creek Ave., Battle Ground. Hear Yoram Bauman, Ph.D., discuss efforts to establish a tax on carbon in the state of Washington similar to the carbon tax that has been in place in British Columbia since 2008. Bauman, an environmental economist and the co-author of several books, including “The Cartoon Introduction to Climate Change” and “The Cartoon Introduction to Economics,” is the executive director of Carbon Washington. PROFESSIONAL WRITER SERIES will feature Zarah Moeggenberg, “Poetry and the Spoken Word,” on Thu., April 14, 7-9 p.m., at WSU Vancouver, Multimedia Classroom Building, Room 6, 14204 NE Salmon Creek Ave., Vancouver. Currently a doctoral student in rhetoric at WSU in Pullman, Moeggenberg is a spoken word poet who has been published in The Fourth River, Oklahoma Review, Diverse Voices Quarterly and many others. Her first book of poetry, “To Waltz on a Pin,” was published in 2015. Moeggenberg earned an M.F.A. in poetry from Northern Michigan University. This event is free and open to all. COMMUNITY MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY: First through 12th graders. Pung Mul Kwan is an offshoot of an ancient Korean Martial Art. It combines linear and circular movements, joint locks, throws, falling techniques and grappling. Your child will learn this and discipline, patience and control. ZUMBA TONING W/ MARTI: When it comes to body sculpting, Zumba Toning raises the bar (or rather, the toning stick). It combines targeted body-sculpting exercises and high-energy cardio work with Latin-infused Zumba moves to create a calorie-torching, strength-training dance fitness-party. Class meets on Wednesdays at the Chief Umtuch Cafeteria starting April 13 from 6:30-7:30 p.m., five sessions, cost is $48. YOGA CLASSES: Benefits of yoga include stress reduction, increased muscle tone, increased flexibility, improved strength and endurance, and fuller, easier breathing. There are two options for the All Levels class. Mondays from 9-10 a.m. or 6-7 p.m., starting April 25. The Yoga Foundations class for beginners is Thursday morning from 10-11 a.m., and starts April 14, four sessions, cost is $25. ZUMBA GOLD AND ZUMBA GOLD TONING: Program combines the enticing international rhythms of the Zumba program with the strength training techniques of the Zumba® Toning program, creating an easy to follow, health boosting dance fitness program for the active older adult as well as beginners. Through modified dynamic lightweight resistance training, participants can prevent age-related bone loss, increase muscle strength and definition, decrease body fat and improve mobility, posture, coordination and cognition.
