HIGHLAND HARVEST FAIR will be Sat., Sept. 26, 1-5 p.m., at Highland Lutheran Church, 38809 NE 41st Ave., La Center. There will be games and prizes, crafts and raffles, a bounce house, petting zoo, face painting, picture booth, games and more. Free admission. Tickets available to purchase for food and games. 2015 HUMANE SOCIETY Dinner and Auction will be Sat., Oct. 3, 5-10 p.m., at the Vancouver Hilton, 301 W. 6th St., Vancouver. This annual dinner auction is a night of the community coming together to support dogs and cats. The theme for this year’s event is Vintage Carnival. K-8 RECREATIONAL BASKETBALL: Registration opens Oct. 1 for the Community Education K-8 Recreational Basketball League. There are eight games beginning Sat., Jan. 9. Skills and personal development are the main emphasis in this recreational league. Are you interested in volunteer coaching? BASKETBALL AND VOLLEYBALL REFEREES: Battle Ground Community Education is looking for high school students to referee fall volleyball games and winter basketball games. Games are on Saturdays. TRIPS AND TOURS: Touring Kayak long tour & Lesson. Explore local waterways at a leisurely pace in touring kayaks. These stable and responsive kayaks will allow you to quickly become proficient paddlers. Both solo and double kayaks are available. Instructors provide a brief introduction/lesson to kayaking, so even the first timer will be ready for the tour. Cost includes kayak equipment and guide. Trips go rain or shine. MAD SCIENCE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS: Junior Space Cadets, calling all cosmonauts. Here’s your chance to fly through the galaxy with the greatest of ease. Travel to the farthest corner of the universe and walk around on undiscovered planets without the hassle of putting on a space suit. Join the Mad Science Club (MS) and stay after school for hands-on science fun with cool program topics and take-home projects. K-5 at Pleasant Valley and K-4 at Glenwood meet on Thursdays starting Oct. 8, 3:40-4:40 p.m., K-4 at Yacolt meets on Tuesdays starting Oct. 6, 4-5 p.m., six sessions, cost is $90. EVALUATING MASON BEES Cocoons workshop will be Sat., Oct. 3, 10 a.m.-noon, at the Cowlitz County Training Center, 1942 First Ave., Longview. This two-hour session is a “hands-on” active and fun class to help you identify what’s in your mason bee tubes and blocks. If you don’t want to harvest your own bees, but would like the experience and the knowledge, they have bee tubes and blocks you can harvest. When you’re done, participants will talk about overwintering your bees and creating containers for their long sleep. Bring your questions and a paper bag to carry home your cocoons. Participants will need to bring a box cutter or something similar to cut open their straws. Class registration is $10, limited to 30 people and due by Sept. 30.
