Ready, set, fish

One of Clark County’s most anticipated youth events is finally here as the Klineline Kids Fishing Derby at Salmon Creek Park kicks off this weekend.

On Friday, special needs kids and special needs adults will fish and on Saturday kids ages five through 14 will fish. Last year more than 11,000 people attended the two-day event.

For the last two years Klineline Kids Fishing Nonprofit, the event host, has had online registrations which has allowed them to track demographics. According to their reports,  participants come from Clark, Skamania and Cowlitz counties in Washington, and from Multnomah and Clackamas counties in Oregon. They’ve also seen participants from Astoria, OR, and Duvall, WA.

“Each year we see growth in attendance,” a statement from Klineline Kids Fishing Nonprofit said.

In 2016 the organization also gave away 500 pounds of trout fillets from the event to Share House in Vancouver.

Registration

Registration is at.klineline-kf.org.

Entry is $5 and includes a kids fishing rod and reel, bait, and a T-shirt.

If a child is unable to pay the $5 registration fee, the organization will give them a scholarship to attend.

“No child is turned away,” Klineline Kids Fishing Nonprofit said in their announcement. “We give about 500 scholarships each year.”

Schedule

Starting at 8 a.m. each day, participants fish on the hour for 45 minutes.

Prizes will be awarded for the smallest and largest fish caught during each time slot.

A random drawing for 32 kids bikes will be held during the event, and 32 tackle boxes and trophies are given away as well.

Sponsoring the event

“Sponsors of $250 or more are encouraged to put up a booth and/or hang a banner,” Klineline Kids Fishing Nonprofit said. “A booth requires three sheets of plywood for a floor to protect the grass in the park. In past years we’ve had an archery clinic in the back meadow, a bouncy house for little ones, a spin to win game, painting paper fish, build a whirligig or birdhouse booth, hot cocoa and coffee, and free food while (on Friday) therapy llamas walk the park making friends with visitors. Nothing is for sale during this event.”
