North County schools up for theater awards this weekend

Posted

This weekend, the 15th Annual 5th Avenue Awards will honor high school musical theater, and North County schools have a strong showing.

The awards show is a gathering of musical theater students from all across Washington, with awards given out based on the 2016-2017 school year.

To be nominated, high schools from across Washington submitted their musicals to the 5th Avenue Awards Committee. Then, theater professionals visited high schools around the state to see the productions.

“In 15 years, the program has grown in size and scope from 24 productions and 3,100 students to a record high this year of 122 productions at 100 schools, with more than 12,000 students participating,” 5th Avenue said in a news release. “This eagerly awaited event features performances from the most talented students in the region. Celebrity guests and business leaders from the Seattle arts community will present awards to recipients throughout the evening. This year, an estimated 2,300 high school students are expected to attend the ceremony, with nominated students and schools performing excerpts from their shows. These talented students will truly get a taste of what it's like to perform in front of a packed house.”

The 21 categories attracted 189 nominations and 167 honorable mentions in various categories this year.
