BG Elks to celebrate Flag Day with June 8 event

Posted

Patriotism has characterized the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks of the United States of America since the early days of the organization. Allegiance to the flag of this country is a requirement of every member.

In 1907, the Grand Lodge of the BPOE designated, by resolution, June 14 as Flag Day.  The Grand Lodge of the Order adopted mandatory observance of the occasion by every lodge in 1911, and the requirement continues.

On Wednesday, June 8, at 7:30 p.m., the Battle Ground Elks Lodge No. 2589, located at 907 SE Grace Ave., in Battle Ground, will perform with the assistance of The Lewis & Clark Young Marines, 1st Washington Battalion, NW Regiment 6th Young Marine Division, and a Flag Day Ritual Ceremony.

The Elks prompted President Woodrow Wilson to recognize the Order’s observance of Flag Day for its patriotic expression. However, it was not until 1949 when President Harry Truman, himself a member of the Elks, made the proclamation that thereafter June 14 would be a day of national observance for the symbol of our country.

The Battle Ground Elks event is open to the public, and everyone is encouraged to come and participate in the patriotic observance.
