The Clark College Women’s Choral Ensemble, Chorale and Concert Choir, under the direction of April B. Duvic and Janet Reiter, will host a pair of concerts Thurs. March 15 and Fri. March 16, 7:30 p.m.

The Women’s Choral Ensemble and Chorale, with their guests, the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics Women’s Ensemble and their director, Margaret Green, present How Can I Keep From Singing? March 15 at the First Presbyterian Church, 4300 Main St., Vancouver.

The Clark Women’s Ensemble will sing the concert’s title song, as well as a selection of spirituals, sacred pieces, Japanese folk songs, and the premiere of Echo, composed by Clark alumni Brandon Stewart. They will also join the Women’s Ensemble from VSAA in Ola Gjeilo’s Ubi caritas.

The Chorale’s program includes works by Randall Thompson, John Rutter, Beaverton native Morten Lauridsen, and Simon and Garfunkel, as well as premiering Clark College professor Donald Appert’s work Kyrie.

On March 16, Clark’s Concert Choir and the Concert Band, under the direction of Richard Inouye, will present their 2012 Winter Concert, Life’s a Song and Dance, March 16 at the Royal Durst Theatre, Vancouver School of Arts and Academics, 3100 Main St. The program includes a wide variety of dance-derived music spanning Celtic, Spanish, and popular early American dance songs.

The highlight of the Concert Band’s segment will feature Robert Russell Bennett’s seminal Suite of Old American Dances, featuring guest conductor Dr. Ed Higgins, Director of Wind Studies from Portland State University. Dr. Higgins is also the editor of the Deluxe Edition of the five-movement suite that was inspired by popular music from turn-of-the-century America.

Both concerts are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Peggy Winston in the Clark College Music Department, (360) 992-2662.
