GARDENING CAMP FOR YOUTH, Camp Luqal Luqal, hosted by the WSU Master Gardeners, will be held Mon.-Fri., July 7-11, 8-11:10 a.m. for grades 1-3 and 1-4 p.m. for grades 3-5. This camp provides hands-on experience for youth to explore the world of bugs, plants and weather. Cost for the class is $25 and is limited to 25 children. No pressure, just lots of fun while these young athletes participate in all three sports through unique Skyhawks games. MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER Academy will run July 21-Aug. 8, Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at River HomeLink, cost is $185. Summer Academy is open to 5th through 7th graders (during 2013-14 school year). With the help of two certified teachers, students will continue to increase their reading and mathematics skills as they are immersed in a three-week unit. Students will have an opportunity to brush up on their learning as they join in lively activities, discussions, games and other learning activities focused around engaging middle school themes. The program offers free transportation from key pick-up locations within the Battle Ground School District boundaries (Glenwood, Captain Strong and Yacolt). CREATIVE WRITING class begins June 30 and goes through Aug. 4.  Class meets on Monday nights from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at the Lewisville Campus and is for ages 12-18, cost is $55. Students will read and discuss a variety of genres and learn the craft of writing through active weekly assignments. After a variety of class activities, students will conclude class with a creative writing portfolio consisting a short story (or excerpt of a larger work), an autobiographical story and a poem. TIGER CAGE Basketball Camp (Boys and Girls Grades 1st-9th), players will be coached on individual and team skills in a competitive, fun atmosphere. Suitable levels of skill and competition will be provided for 1st-9th grade boys and girls. Cage Camp coaches will include Greg Kalian, BGHS Head Boys Coach, Joe Potter, BGHS Girls Head Coach, and other Tiger coaching staff as well as current BGHS basketball players. Instilling skills, enthusiasm, and a love for the game will be the goals. Boys camp costs $100, girls camp costs $99. Additional fee for on-site registration on the day of camp is $10. AL ALDRIDGE’S “Rookie Camp” for 3rd - 6th grade girls is back. Al Aldridge, celebrated Greater St. Helen’s League high school coach, continues to annually bring Clark County a high quality basketball camp for girls. Emphasis is on teaching fundamentals: shooting, ball handling, passing, and defense, and helping each young player gain a better understanding of the game of basketball, with special attention to having fun. The Greater St. Helens Girls Basketball Rookie Camp of Champions (Ages 8-12) starts June 23 at Prairie High School and runs Mon.-Thurs., 8:30-11:30 a.m. The Minor Camp of Champions (Ages 12-15) for 7th-9th grade girls starts June 23 at Prairie High School and runs Mon.-Thurs., 1-4:30 p.m. Emphasis is on ‘position work:’ guards, forwards, and post play. A3 SUMMER CAMP (Action, Adventure, Academics)-One Team, Battle Ground Community Education and the BGPS Learning Support program have joined forces to provide a summer experience that will engage kids in grades K-4 in Action, Adventure and Academics. This all-day experience melds learning with organized physical activity, life lessons and more. Camp runs Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at Maple Grove, and there are six weeks to choose from.
