Catch a trout at Merwin Park

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. join other fishing youth on Saturday, June 8 for the Mount St. Helens Kids’ Fishing Derby in Merwin Park. The event has 1,500 rainbow trout in a netted-off section of Lake Merwin waiting to be caught by kids. The event will have loaner rods, worms for bait and volunteers to teach kids how to fish. Fish cleaning will also be provided. 

Along with the fishing, the event will include a parade, storytelling inside of an inflatable salmon, face painting and more. Everything is free, including snacks. Bring a cooler to ice your catch. Merwin Park is located off Hwy 503, about 7.5 miles east of Woodland.  For more information, call (360) 449-7800.

Get outside at the fort 

National Get Outdoors Day (GO Day) is bringing the community together from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 8 at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. GO Day is a free, family-friendly event held around the country that promotes healthy, active, outdoor fun.



GO Day at The Fort will bring together 35 land management agencies, nonprofits and outdoor based businesses that will introduce the public to outdoor activities. There will be food vendors and booths west of Pearson Air Museum lined along 5th Street. 

“We love working with all of these partners at Get Outdoors Day to help encourage kids and families to experience their public lands,” Gifford Pinchot National Forest Acting Supervisor Angie Elam said in a press release. 

As a part of Get Outdoors Day, Friends of Fort Vancouver are hosting two lectures from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Fort Vancouver Visitor Center. From 2 - 3 p.m., volcanologist and author Kevin Scott will present “The Voice of This Stone: Learning from Volcanic Disasters Around the World.”

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be a Brigade Encampment reenactment on the Great Meadow north of East Fifth Street.
