Battle Ground’s Rose Festival float takes shape

Posted

This year’s Battle Ground float for the Portland Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade in June is taking shape both on paper and clay. The float’s theme is “Froggie Went A-Courtin.’”

A giant frog and Miss Mousie will ride along and the old-time song “Froggie Went A-Courtin’” will be played from the float during the parade.

Along with a drawing, a clay model has also been built.

Louise Tucker, a past foreman and current organizer and board member, said the volunteer decorators are ready to get started, but they still need additional leadership and more construction volunteers. Specifically, they are looking for a general chairman “to make timely decisions, delegate tasks and preside at infrequent meetings.” Welders and wood workers are also in high demand.

“Being a rose float general chairman is a great opportunity for a retired CEO,” according to a statement by said Louise and Bill Tucker.

Construction of the float will continue until it hits the streets of Portland in June.

Work on the float is done at the city’s Flex Building on South Grace Avenue. Construction volunteers usually work on Saturdays and a few evenings a week; decorators work a couple of times a week during the day.

The next meeting of volunteers is 1 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 19, at the Dollar’s Corner Fire Station, 21609 NE 72nd Ave., Battle Ground. It will begin with a potluck lunch.
