Master Food Preserver volunteer training scheduled

The WSU Master Food Preserver Program is looking for area residents who enjoy volunteering, like helping others, want to learn more about food preservation/food safety and are willing to share their knowledge with the community.

The WSU Clark County Master Food Preservers (MFP) are a group of highly dedicated, trained and certified individuals who volunteer throughout the county providing information about food preservation and safety. The members do a wide variety of tasks including the Food Safety hotline, developing and staffing displays at community events, testing pressure canning gauges, teaching/assisting in community classes and more. MFP’s volunteer year-round with the majority of events occurring between the months of June and September, usually on weekends with some weekday events.

The program is 50-hour training program held over seven weeks. Classes and training includes an in-depth study of food safety and specific procedures in food handling, preparation and preservation along with all the most current updates and guidelines; and actual hands-on food preservation sessions.



Applications will be accepted through March 16. Two orientation sessions are scheduled for Tue., March 17, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or Mon., March 23 from 6–7:30 p.m. at The Heritage Farm, 1919 NE 78th St., Vancouver. The seven week training will be on Fridays , April 17-June 5, from 8:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. each week. The course fee of $225 covers costs of notebook, literature/booklets and all supplies for the food preservation.
