Education

ACES TRAINING with Dr. McVittie, Connect to ACEs – Brain Development, will be Wed., Feb. 10, at Battle Ground Baptist Church, 1110 NW 6th Ave., Battle Ground. There will be breakfast for community members from 8:30-9 a.m., then ACEs workshop for community members from 9-noon, followed by lunch for Captain Strong and Chief Umtuch staff from 1:15-1:45 p.m. and workshop for Captain and Chief staff from 1:45-4:45 p.m. Learn about the science behind ACEs and how you can respond well to youth. CODE TO THE FUTURE, Video Game Programming: Learn computer programming and make your own working video game design. Beginners are welcome. This class is open to students in second to sixth grade who are interested in learning computer programming in a fun and kid-friendly environment. Two different times to choose from on Fridays, 3:30-4:30 p.m., or 4:40-5:40 p.m. Our methods integrate both Programming and Game Design, giving students a fun and well-rounded understanding of how to utilize technology to create. YMCA LEGO ENGINEERING: After school for Grades kindergarten through fourth grade, design your masterpiece and then create it. Each day your architect will be given a project that they must first design, and then build with LEGOs. There will be different projects for grades K-1, and grades 2-4. Glenwood Heights Primary will meet in the gym from 3:30-5 p.m. on Mondays starting Feb. 22, seven sessions, cost is $70. Captain Strong will meet in the small gym from 3:40-5:10 p.m. on Tuesdays starting Feb. 23, seven sessions, $70. INTRODUCTION TO WATERCOLOR: Practice watercolor painting and receive individual attention as part of a small group. You will learn methods of mixing colors to practice scales of value and create classic realistic form. You will also practice an array of applications to create rich colors, atmospheric effects or texture. There will be classroom demonstrations to help you develop your understanding of color theory, composition and texture. By the end of the course the student will create an original dahlia painting or an original composition based on a subject of your choice. THE BOARD OF CLARK COUNTY Councilors will conduct a public hearing Tue., Feb. 16, 10 a.m., at the Clark County Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St., Vancouver. The public hearing will be for reconsideration of a preferred alternative for the 2016 Comprehensive Plan Update and, if need be, correcting the preferred alternative map. R.I.P.P.E.D. 4 KIDS/TEENS FITNESS: Super fun high intensity conditioning for all fitness levels. Plyometrics, mixed martial arts and strength training to build children and teens strong in a non competitive nurturing environment. Inspiring music, nutritional component and games like Butterball and soccer to build teamwork. Great training for athletes and people new to fitness.
