Community Events

STUFF THE BUS food drive to benefit the North County Community Food Bank will be Sat., May 7, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Battle Ground Fred Meyer parking lot and the Battle Ground Walmart parking lot. The Battle Ground Public School Employees union (PSE) is sponsoring the event. JAIME HERRERA BEUTLER will hosting her sixth annual Southwest Washington Jobs Fair on Mon., May 2. The jobs fair will be hosted at the Armed Forces Reserve Center in Vancouver.  She will also offer a job hunting workshop on April 28 at the Vancouver Community Library. WOODLAND POLICE CHIEF Phil Crochet will host a public forum on Wed., April 27, 6 p.m., at the Woodland Police Department, 200 E. Scott Ave., Woodland. This forum represents the Woodland Police Department’s ongoing effort to be transparent and build positive relationships with the community it serves. APRIL SHOWERS bring May Flowers, it’s the annual garden show at Aurora Gallery. Garden art, birds, flowers and garden pottery for the whole month of May. Sports & Recreation

MARTIAL ARTS: Community Martial Arts for first through 12th grade starts May 3 at Captain Strong, Olympic Taekwondo for ages 5 through adult starts April 28 at Laurin Middle School, two class times to choose from, and Adult Martial Arts/Self-Defense for ages 16 and up starts May 5 at Captain Strong. PRESCHOOL-ADULT DANCE: Classes start May 2 and meet on Mondays at the Lewisville Gym on the stage. Classes are 45 minutes and meet between 3:45-8:15 p.m., cost is $54 per class. Options include Preschool Dance-Ballet, Tap, & Tumbling ages 3-5, Beginning Ballet and Tap ages 5-7, Intermediate Ballet and Tap ages 7-12, and Teen and Adult Tap. KIDS & TEENS FITNESS: Super fun high intensity conditioning for all fitness levels. Plyometrics, mixed martial arts and strength training to build children and teens strong in a non competitive nurturing environment. Inspiring music, nutritional component and games like Butterball and soccer to build teamwork. Great training for athletes and people new to fitness.  Parents can sign up with their teen (*not available for kid classes). New sessions start at the beginning of May and classes are available on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Prices range from $33-47, discounts available when signing up three or more kids. Education

BLOCK CARVING AND PRINTING: This class provides a 3-D approach to creating a reproducible image for printing. Techniques will include drawing, image transfer, carving on a soft stamp block and using a brayer and water soluble paint to block print on card stock. The finished products will be a carved block and up to six printed note cards. Cost is $20, plus all supplies will be provided.  There is a $5 supply fee payable at class (cash or check). EXPLORE THE WORLD OF PAPERMAKING: This is a two-hour class that introduces the art of papermaking. Participants will learn the basics of crafting handmade paper from recycled materials. Using the basic tools of papermaking, students will create papers of various colors and sizes. They will have the opportunity to add flowers, plants and other natural resources, making it their own.
