WSU extension program helps fight diabetes

The Diabetes Prevention Program is a one-year program that can help you reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes, lose weight and become more physically active. 

Recent graduates of this program have lowered their cholesterol and blood pressure and reducing the medications taken. In addition, they have lost between 5 percent and 17 percent body weight, reduced their risk of diabetes and gained a 100 percent peace of mind that they are leading a healthy lifestyle and have control of their life and can prevent type 2 diabetes, according to a news release.

The Diabetes Prevention Program consists of 12 weekly sessions of one hour each, followed by four bi-weekly sessions, ending in seven monthly sessions.

Each week you will be weighed privately, receive printed materials, learn about food choices, increase your physical activity, learn to deal with social and emotional barriers and triggers that will help you lose weight and develop a lifelong eating and physical activity plan that will prevent you from getting diabetes.

People with prediabetes often do not experience any symptoms. A person’s risk for diabetes includes a family history of diabetes, history of gestational diabetes, being over the age of 45, overweight and physically inactive. 



Specially trained coaches will work closely with you to achieve goals and get past roadblocks. Session topics will range from tipping the calorie balance to four ways to healthy eating out and ways to stay motivated.

You will learn about healthy eating habits, increase your physical activity and learn real life problem solving, and have great group support to be successful.
