Hockinson Wellness Massage offers solutions

What began as a chiropractic and massage practice in Hockinson has recently changed hands and been redefined.

Melody Vorce, licensed massage practitioner, took over as owner in January and changed the name to Hockinson Wellness Massage after the chiropractor she was working with relocated to Seattle.

A long-time Vancouver resident, Vorce studied massage at Everest College. There she focused on relaxation, deep tissue treatment and a bit of Thai massage. She also took some spa courses, which she’s incorporated into services provided at Hockinson Wellness Massage.

Vorce has always had an interest in the health care industry. Aware of her preference for a more relaxed environment, she chose massage over nursing and is finding numerous possibilities within her career choice.

She continues to be amazed, in particular, with deep tissue treatment massage. This is typically used on motor vehicle accident patients and clients with focused injuries and chronic pain. Seeing clients come in the first time after an accident, work through the individualized treatment plan and be able to perform activities and movements they were temporarily unable to do is rewarding for Vorce.

“I have a great deal of respect for massage and what it can do for the human body. The benefits are just endless,” Vorce said.

Massage can assist individuals who have trouble sleeping and people who deal with high blood pressure. Being able to let go of stress through relaxation massage can play a significant role in affecting health for the better. Vorce believes that people would be impressed to realize how great a body’s muscles hold on to everyday pressures.

One of the services provided at Hockinson Wellness Massage is full body exfoliation. This is a dry brush exfoliation that increases circulation and sluffs off dead skin cells. Improved circulation helps to move fresh oxygenated blood throughout the body and helps to move toxins out of the body through the skin’s pores after stimulating the lymphatic system. Once the body is completely exfoliated, the skin is better able to absorb nutrient-rich moisturizers and lotions. The treatment can be performed on its own or before a relaxation massage but Vorce sees an extra benefit to full body exfoliation prior to a seaweed cocoon or wrap.

The process of a seaweed wrap begins with a seaweed product applied to the entire body. Then the client is wrapped in various layers and relaxes in this cocoon-state for about 20 minutes. The product is taken off with warm towels and a brief massage with quick sweeping motions completes the treatment. One of the greatest benefits to a seaweed wrap is, again, its detoxifying abilities. It also promotes hormonal balance, reduces symptoms of Fibromyalgia, decreases muscle pain, stimulates circulation and improves lymph flow. According to Vorce, increased lymph flow can boost a person’s immune system, among other things.

In addition to Swedish (relaxation) and deep tissue (treatment) massage, Vorce offers hot stone massage to compliment either method. Clients can also turn a massage experience into aromatherapy with lavender, rosemary or citrus-scented oils.

Vorce is passionate about the community she is servicing. In the same building as Hockinson Market, she’s had a lot of exposure to area residents and received considerable positive feedback.

“I am so grateful for the people in Hockinson,“ Vorce said. “There has been an outpouring of support. I have had numerous people say they want to refer people to me. A lot of very friendly people that I am just completely enjoying getting to know and be a part of.”

Her response to such a reception is heartwarming. Throughout February, Hockinson Wellness Massage donated proceeds to a local family who had a premature baby weighing in at 2 pounds 7 ounces. In the month of March, clients will receive a $5 discount per regularly-priced massage for every clothing donation in support of God’s Closet, which supplies clothing to families with small children. She’s keeping her eyes open to other needs and intends to direct proceeds to a different local cause every month.
