Composting workshops teach how to recycle

Area residents can get ready for gardening season with Master Composter/Recycler composting workshops.

The workshops teach gardeners how to be earth-friendly and save money by turning yard waste and kitchen scraps into a rich garden amendment. Registration is required for all workshops and is available at www.columbiasprings.org/mcr/classes. Those without internet access may call (360) 882-0936, Ext. 224 to register.

Here’s a look at the upcoming workshops:

Backyard

Composting Workshop

Those who have questions about composting can get answers at this free workshop. The workshop is also for those who want to learn how to get their compost cooking, or those who wonder how to tell when their compost is finished, or what type of bin is best?

Class includes classroom introduction to basic composting science, and a visit to a composting demonstration site.

The workshop dates and locations are:

• Sat., May. 17, 10 a.m.-noon, held at Columbia Springs, 12208 SE Evergreen Highway, Vancouver.



• Sat., June 21, 10 a.m.-noon, held at C.A.S.E.E., Building B, 11104 NE 149th St. Brush Prairie.

Family Wormshop

This workshop is squiggly fun for the whole family. Participants will learn the care and feeding of red worms and discover how they can help you turn fruit and vegetable scraps from the kitchen into food for your garden or houseplants.

Children should be at least five years of age to participate. Participants receive a worm bin and red worms to take home for a $35 materials fee. Information is free, if you don’t want a bin and worms you can come for free.

• Thurs., May 22, 6-8 p.m., held at Columbia Springs, 12208 SE Evergreen Highway, Vancouver.

• Sat., June 28, 10 a.m.-noon, held at Held at CASEE, Building B, 11104 NE 149th St. Brush Prairie.

The Master Composter/Recycler Program is funded by Clark County Department of Environmental Services and administered by Columbia Springs.
