Ten things to know when you grow workshop offered

Area residents who are thinking of growing their own fruit trees, or those who already have trees and want to know more about proper care are invited to attend an upcoming workshop offered the WSU Clark County Extension.

Growing high quality fruit in Clark County’s wet environment can be a challenge. But it can be done, and without chemicals. On Sat., Jan. 11, WSU Extension Clark County will offer a 4-and-one-half hour workshop (10 a.m.-2:30 p.m.) on the basics for successful fruit tree care.

Monica Maggio, of Core Home Fruit Services, will share the 10 most important things for ensuring healthy trees and an abundant harvest, here in the Pacific Northwest. The morning lecture includes: site requirements and prep, how to select a good tree, general care and maintenance requirements of different fruits, pollination needs, common pests, and more.

After a brown bag lunch, the class will move outside to explore the morning’s concepts with hands-on activities at Heritage Farm’s fruit tree orchards.

The January workshop is one of a four-part series. The workshop scheduled for Feb. 1 is Fruit Tree Pruning; March 15 is Fruit Tree Grafting: Bench Grafting and Top Working; and April 19 is Seasonal Maintenance for Fruit Trees. Area residents can take one class or take them all. The cost is $45 each or $160 for the whole series.

Refreshments and handouts provided. Those attending are encouraged to bring a sack lunch. Class size is limited to 35. Registration can be completed online at: http://bpt.me/523163 for the January workshop or at http://bpt.me/525705 for the full series.
