Field Day offers opportunity to learn how to raise grapes, make wine

Posted

Rural landowners interested in learning more about raising wine grapes on their rural property and making their own wine will likely be interested in attending a workshop on Sat., Oct. 19.

The event is offered by WSU Extension Clark County. It will be a full-day workshop that will cover what it takes to establish a vineyard and raise grapes free from pests.

Gwen Hoheisel, WSU Grape Specialist in the Tri-Cities area, will cover vineyard establishment, pest management, and the wide array of on-line publications available from the University.

A staff member from Oregon Vineyard Supply in Aurora, OR will give an hour-long presentation on their services, which include custom planting and management. This company is one of the biggest in the burgeoning Oregon wine industry. They carry all the supplies needed to establish a successful vineyard.

After the provided lunch, there will be an in-depth tour of the new Gouger Cellars in Ridgefield, where owner Gary Gouger will show those in attendance how to make award-winning wines and let folks sample some of his vintages. Gouger recently had over 2,000 participants at the re-opening of his winery.

The class has a registration fee of $30 per person, which covers refreshments, lunch, and wine tasting. Class size is limited to 30. Those interested can register on-line at: https://ocrs.wsu.edu/Signup/?eventid=917.

The meeting will be held at the Heritage Farm, at 1919 NE 78th Street, Vancouver. It will start at 8:45 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. at the Ridgefield winery.
