As the cool, crisp weather approaches during the month of October, the experts at Tsugawa Nursery in Woodland say it is a great time to garden in the Pacific Northwest, and is an especially good time to plant trees and shrubs.

Join the team at Tsugawa Nursery as they present several garden seminars during the month of October, including What to Do in the Garden, Fall Potting Party, Overwintering Your Bonsai and Pruning Ornamentals.

Tsugawa Nursery is located at 410 E. Scott Ave., Woodland.

•    What to Do in the Garden in October, Sat., Oct. 5, 11 a.m.: This is Tsugawa’s monthly seminar on what should be done in the landscape and garden. The weather has turned cooler and wetter, but October is a great time of year to plant trees and shrubs. It is also a good time to take lots of notes on your own garden or landscape. Bring notes to this seminar and the Tsugawa experts will try and help decipher them. Bring pictures and samples for the experts to look at during the Q & A portion. This is a regular seminar on the first Saturday of every month.

This seminar is free and open to the public. Space is limited, register ahead online at www.tsugawanursery.com/events.htm or call (360) 225-8750.

•    Fall Potting Party, Sat., Oct. 12,10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.: Tsugawa held their first potting party of the 2013 season in April, but here’s another chance to participate. Tsugawa staff will provide the soil, fertilizer and hands-on assistance to help you create some fall containers for your home. Participants just need to show up with containers and creativity, or choose from a selection of containers at the nursery.

This is an open-house style event, participants may come anytime between 10 a.m.-4 p.m. This is free and open to the public, a fee will be dependent upon additional materials used.

•    Overwintering Your Bonsai, Sat., Oct. 19, 11 a.m.: Even though they are small, bonsai trees need to experience a dormant period during the year just as larger trees do. This bonsai seminar will help prepare this miniature work of art for the cold of winter. Tsugawa staff will explain the best way to prepare and offer a variety of options for keeping your bonsai cozy when the temperature drops. Participants should remember to bring their bonsai along.

This seminar is free and open to the public. Space is limited, register ahead online at www.tsugawanursery.com/events.htm or call (360) 225-8750.

•    Pruning Ornamentals with Brian Tsugawa, Sat., Oct. 26, 11 a.m.: Many gardeners love Japanese maples and dwarf conifers for the beauty, elegance and strength they bring to the landscape. The Japanese maple usually radiates elegance in all seasons, with delicate leaves, fine fall color and nice branch patterns. The dwarf conifers show of their powerful structure and quiet beauty during winter. Simple pruning of both types of ornamentals can help maintain and enhance their natural forms. Join Brian Tsugawa as he demonstrates tips and techniques to get the most from the Japanese maples and dwarf conifers.

This seminar is free and open to the public. Space is limited, register ahead online at www.tsugawanursery.com/events.htm or call (360) 225-8750.

Celebrating 30-plus years, Tsugawa Nursery is a family-owned-and-operated business. The Tsugawa family began berry farming in Woodland in 1947. George and Mable Tsugawa were married in 1950 and raised six children. The Tsugawa family worked hard together to make their farm successful, initially growing strawberries. In January 1981, the Tsugawa family purchased a defunct nursery in Woodland. They opened Tsugawa Nursery in March of 1981 with very little nursery stock, but plenty of vision for things to come. The Nursery has grown and become well established as one of the area’s best places to shop for garden and landscape plants and supplies.
