Woodland High School’s 25th Annual Spring Plant Sale is scheduled for Fri., May 9, from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sat., May 10, from  9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Shoppers at the sale can choose from a large variety of annuals and perennials, hanging baskets, petunias, marigolds, geraniums, and more vegetables than ever before including 30 different varieties of tomatoes. The plants have been grown and cared for daily by the Woodland High School students.

Horticulture is one of the most rapidly-growing areas in Agriculture. The word “Horticulture” is derived from a Latin word meaning “garden cultivation.”  As an industry, Horticulture contributes billions of dollars to the United States’ economy every year.

Horticulture students at Woodland High School explore the various aspects in the field, including greenhouse management, nursery production, and landscape design. Also, highly-technical subjects such as plant propagation, plant science, and taxonomy are covered in the course.

The plant sale teaches the students customer service, marketing, advertisement, problem solving, organizational skills, and work ethic. The funds raised from the plant sale go right back into the school’s FFA program for next year’s plant sale and activities.

“The students are very proud of their work and hope you can make it to the plant sale, so you can enjoy gardening as we do,” said Mary Ellen Vetter, career and technical education teacher at Woodland High School.

Woodland High School is located at 757 Park Street, Woodland, and can be reached by phone at (360) 841-2700. The plant sale will be held in the high school greenhouse, located at the west end of the parking lot.
