Humane Society’s summer camps offer experiences with animals

Posted

The Humane Society for Southwest Washington (HSSW) is now enrolling campers for a brand new HSSW experience. Discover Camp, formerly Critter Camp, gives kids entering grades 3 – 6 a behind-the-scenes experience at HSSW.

Discover Campers begin every morning with hands-on time meeting our animals, education about the shelter and special guest speakers. After lunch, which is included in the price of registration, campers embark on a globe-trotting journey around the world. In these lessons, they explore a region of the world, learn about the area’s indigenous animals and even meet special animal ambassadors. Past ambassadors have included snakes, tortoises, even a tarantula.

Discover Camp will have three weekly sessions available for children entering grades 3-6 in the fall of 2014:

• June 23-27 – Grades 3-4

• July 7-11 – Grades 3-4

• July 21-25 – Grades 5-6 – full

Camps are filling fast with limited space available in two of the three sessions. Register for Discover Camp at www.southwesthumane.org. For more information, contact Sam Ellingson at sellingson@southwesthumane.org or (360) 213-2626.

The Humane Society for Southwest Washington (HSSW) is the only open admission animal sheltering facility in Southwest Washington – sheltering more than 8,000 homeless and abused animals every year. More than 540 volunteers donated 32,000-plus hours annually.

The HSSW does not euthanize healthy adoptable animals. They remain residents of the shelter until they are adopted or transferred to another shelter or rescue organization that continues to work to find that animal a permanent home.

The HSSW is a member of ASAP (Animal Shelter Alliance of Portland), a group of public and private shelters in the greater Vancouver/Portland area committed to ending the euthanasia of social, healthy and treatable cats and dogs in our local shelters, by collaborating on spay/neuter programs, educational and outreach efforts, and the promotion of humane alternatives for feral cats. Since 1897, the Humane Society for Southwest Washington has enriched the lives of people, pets and our community through adoption and outreach, and serves as a resource for companion animal services and education.
