Country Critters wins community pride award

Posted

This year’s winner of Chevron’s Washington State Best Community Pride Club Award is Clark County’s Country Critters, a 4-H rabbit club.

The Best Community Pride program is designed to recognize and reward 4-H youth for efforts that create positive benefits in their community, regionally, or on a state or national level. The recognition the members received has helped motivate them to improve themselves and the community.

Consideration to reward included projects where:

• A better understanding of their community and how it functions is developed;

• Skills necessary to become responsible citizens are demonstrated;

• Participation with others to improve the community’s quality of life occurs; and/or,

• Active involvement by youth in community projects and community decision-making is evidenced.

Country Critters was involved with feeding those in need in Clark County. Over the past three years, their Bunnies Battling Hunger Program, along with the local partnerships with Burgerville and the Youth Efforts Against Hunger (Y.E.A.H.) program have generated more than $5,000 and more than 3,000 pounds of food for the Clark County Food Bank.

In addition to the Bunnies Battling Hunger project, the club also enjoys taking rabbits to senior centers throughout the year. These events are fun and enjoyable for both the residents and the members and bring smiles to a segment of Clark County population that has limited contact with the community outside their residence.

The Best Washington State 4-H Community Pride Award is presented each year to the most outstanding Community Pride Program overall. The award includes a special framed certificate and a $300 cash award. Community Pride awards are made available by the Chevron Companies.

Club president Lizi Jesser made a presentation about the club’s community service involvement at the recent “Know Your Government” dinner in Olympia, during which the club was recognized as Washington State’s Best Community Pride Club.
