Cats can again be adopted at ReTails Thrift Store

After a hiatus, the Humane Society for Southwest Washington’s (HSSW) ReTails Thrift Store again features adoptable cats — and they’re back in style. Bright red cat condos serve as temporary shelter for cats ready to meet their new owners.

“The cats are a fun addition to the shopping experience here, and connect us to the mission of the organization,” explained ReTails’ Vice President and Director of Retail Operations Paul MacKay. “Customers have been asking us when the cats would return, so a lot of people are eager to see them. Some people shop ReTails because it’s a cool thrift store with a tremendous amount of merchandise, and some specifically want to support the humane society’s work.”

Chairs are positioned next to the cat condos so shoppers can sit and interact with the cats or explore the donated pet items stocked for resale in the area. Staff is trained to facilitate adoptions which occur weekly, and ReTails receives two to three new cats per week from the shelter.

“The staff gets extremely excited when cats get adopted, so we personally celebrate each adoption here,” MacKay said.

In 2016, ReTails adopted out more than 100 cats and MacKay said they are likely to exceed that number this year.

Last year the Humane Society for Southwest Washington sheltered over 8,000 animals and facilitated over 5,000 adoptions. Over 880 volunteers work with the organization. They distribute thousands of pounds of pet food each year in collaboration with the Clark County Food Bank.
