Magenta’s 1st 2020 Season Show - “The Marvelous Wonderettes

“What a great evening we’re having.  And to top it all off, we have some terrific entertainment for you.  So hang onto your corsages, and welcome to the stage your very own Marvelous Wonderettes!”

Magenta’s February show opens with the italicized lines above.  What’s not to love!

The first show of the 2020 season throws a British woman (director Jaynie Roberts) headfirst into directing a musical about an American High School Prom.   No, no, that’s not the plotline.  That’s what is really happening at Magenta Theater this February.  But armed with an incredible bevvy of vocalists, a musical director who knows what she’s doing, and a choreographer that is filled with great ideas….this director can’t help but get caught up in the schmaltzy American favorite set in Springfield, USA!  (And what an opportunity to learn about what she missed by never attending an American high school prom!)

This ‘jukebox musical’ has around 35 tunes from the 1950s and 1960s sung by four American beauties, who also happen to be best friends in the show: Cindy Lou, Betty Jean, Suzy and Missy.   Beaverton resident, Nicole Rayner portrays Missy – a lovestruck teenager with her sights set on a man she can’t keep her eyes off every day at school.  Lauren Scher, Portland resident, is the unforgettable Betty Jean who loves to tease her friends with inappropriate outbursts.  Hailing from Vancouver, Honor Stevenson portrays the prettiest girl in school Cindy Lou (and knows it), with Jessica Johnson playing the always-smiling Suzy who is infatuated with the lighting operator.  Kristen Noel is the vocal director, with Maddy Dorry as choreographer.

Deep stuff?  Not necessarily, but who cares when the songs are designed to get audiences moving in their seats and maybe, just maybe quietly singing along.  This hysterical but poignant piece of theatricality was written and created by Roger Bean and is performed with permission of Steele Spring Stage Rights.

7:30 Performances: February 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 26, 27, 28

2pm Matinees: February 22 & 29.
