Detroit Pizza shines right in the heart of Battle Ground

It is likely the oldest pizza restaurant in Battle Ground, and while changing owners a couple of times, Detroit Pizza has captured the hearts of area residents with its speedy take-out and delivery service, fresh-made dough, innovative pizzas, and convenient location right in the middle of downtown.

Current owners Tony and Laurie Domine fulfilled one of their dreams when they took over the reigns of the take-out restaurant in 2011. The couple kept many of the restaurant’s best-loved recipes and also added a few touches of their own, including flavored crusts, a wide delivery area, gluten free pizzas and some clever new menu items.

By the way, to ensure purity of their gluten free dough, they buy it from a local company so that there is no cross-contamination when they make their own dough daily, and they use separate peels and cutters when preparing it, for the same reason.

Unusual touches at Detroit Pizza include a “Detroit Style” deep-dish pizza. The Detroit Hawaiian is one of their most popular pizzas. It’s two inches thick and loaded with chunks of applewood smoked bacon, pineapple, Canadian bacon, and, unlike other Hawaiian versions we’ve had elsewhere, it includes pepperoni, along with the standard mozzarella cheese.

Tony suggests that people might want to try their different crust flavors as well, including butter parmesan, poppy seed, and sesame seed crusts, each of which are free and add a distinctive taste and crunch to the pies. This reporter suggests trying the butter parmesan with their Mac Attack (cheese sauce, macaroni, garlic, mozzarella and cheddar cheese) – triple cheesy goodness, or their BLT (smoked bacon, mozzarella, with lettuce, mayonnaise and diced tomatoes) with the poppy seed crust.

The Joe Louis Knockout is exactly that, a knockout pizza overflowing with Canadian bacon, pepperoni, Italian sausage, seasoned ground beef, sliced black olives, green peppers, fresh sliced mushrooms, onions and mounds of mozzarella. The extra large, 16-inch size will easily feed the whole family.

Of course Tony and his pizza makers, including his son Nick, and daughter Brittany, Mike King (son of the former owner), and Courtney Lewis can fill up any pizza you want on your hand-tossed round, thin crust, or their signature deep dish, with just about any meat or vegetable craved by customers.

Customers rave about the service here. On their website list of comments, there is one gentleman who wrote, “The owner goes above and beyond on customer service. He defines customer service. We needed some pizzas on a day they were going to be closed, he came in and made and delivered them (Outside of their delivery area). Thank you.’’ Another frequent customer drives to Battle Ground from Moses Lake once a week because he “loves their pizza” so much.

And, speaking of delivery, Detroit Pizza not only delivers ready-made pizzas, they also can bring any of their pizzas as U-Bake to your door, and they have a very reasonable $2.50 charge for a wide delivery area.

Customers can also enjoy their salads – the Chef salad is huge and includes lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, red onions, olives, mozzarella and cheddar cheese, a generous portion of sliced Canadian bacon and green peppers. There are several different dressing choices. And, if you’re in the mood for a sub (they have a half dozen varieties) or chicken wings (baked in either BBQ or hot flavors) they’ll fix you right up.

Tony and Laurie have plans to expand and add inside seating – now there are a couple of outside tables – and hopes to be able to seat around 25-30 when they re-configure the kitchen.

Detroit Pizza has daily and seasonal specials and there are coupons on the website www.detroitpizza.com. They happily fill party orders with 48 hours notice.
