SAMUEL RAMSEY
Samuel Melvin Ramsey, 35, died April 29, 2008, in Battle Ground.
Ramsey was born March 31, 1973, in Eugene, OR, and lived in Oregon until moving to Battle Ground three years ago.
Ramsey served in the Army National Guard in 1990, and again in 2003-2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was medically retired in 2004.
Ramsey enjoyed fishing, barbecuing, and trail riding in the Sisters, OR area.
Survivors include widow Holly Ramsey, at home in Battle Ground, sons Samuel J. Ramsey and Cody Ray Ramsey, both at home in Battle Ground, father and step-mother Samuel J. Ramsey and Mary Ann Ramsey, of Battle Ground, mother and step-father Nancy and Mike Howell of Oregon, brothers Jon Spears of Washougal and Tony Ramsey of Amboy, sister Courtney Howell of Oregon, and grandparents John and Marilyn Cooper of Oregon.

WILLIAM RANDALL
William Franklin Randall, 81, died Sept. 1, 2007, in Porterville, CA.
Randall was born July 14, 1926, in Port Republic, Virginia. He served in both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy during World War II. He enjoyed driving his 18-wheeler with his wife, Patricia, as they traveled over much of the United States.
Randall lived in Ridgefield from 1977 until 2002.
Randall was preceded in death by son Jimmy D. Plumlee. Survivors include widow Patricia Randall, at home in Porterville, CA, daughter Charlotte Dehne of Lyle, mother-in-law Artie Vanderford of Porterville, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

RICHARD RANN
Richard Arlen Rann, 74, died Nov. 1, 2007, in Vancouver.
Rann was born Aug. 12, 1933, in Portland, and lived in Clark County for 74 years. He served in the Navy during the Korean War. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and being with his granddaughters.
Rann worked as a longshoreman for 36 years and was a member of Portland Local #8.
Rann was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Rann, in 2005. Survivors include daughter Cindy Bull of Vancouver, and three granddaughters.
Graveside services will be held Wed., Nov. 7, 3 p.m., at Lewisville Cemetery, Battle Ground, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.
ILA RASMUSSEN
Ila Jeanne (Johnson) Rasmussen, 81, died March 4, 2007, in Battle Ground.
Rasmussen was born Dec. 11, 1925, in Springville, UT, where she lived until she married Oran Kay Rasmussen in 1942. The family moved to Montana, California and Texas before settling in Island Park, Idaho, where they lived for about 50 years. Rasmussen moved to Battle Ground about three years ago.
Rasmussen was an active member of her church congregation. She enjoyed rollerskating and singing.
Rasmussen was preceded in death by her husband, Oran, in 2004, two children and three sisters. Survivors include sons John Rasmussen and Michael Rasmussen, both of Idaho, daughter Sally Fangsrud of Battle Ground, sisters Merlene Davis, Carma Fabert and Colette Capson, all of Utah, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Battle Ground, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of cremation and other arrangements.
HOLLIE RASBERRY
Hollie Rasberry, 24, died in a plane crash at White Pass Oct. 7, 2007.
Rasberry was born Feb. 23, 1983, in Vancouver, and lived in Ridgefield until 1997 when her family moved to East Wenatchee where she graduated from Eastmont High School in 2001. In 2004 she moved to Bellingham. She was attending Whatcom Community College and working at Billy McHale’s Restaurant at the time of her death.
Raspberry enjoyed hiking, biking, camping, snowboarding, and skydiving. She was a part of a close-knit family at Skydive Snohomish.
Rasberry was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Joanne Rasberry. Survivors include her mother and step-father, Jona and Don Sharpe of Monroe, father and step-mother Mitch and Cheryl Rasberry of East Wenatchee, sisters Jaima Ritchey of Oregon and Savannah Rasberry of East Wenatchee, grandparents John and Robin Law of East Wenatchee, grandfather Kenneth Rasberry of California, aunts, uncles and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held Sun., Oct. 28, 2 p.m., at Bellingham Cruise Terminal, 355 Harris Ave., Bellingham. American Memorial Association is in charge of cremation and arrangements.
LYLE RAUCH
Lyle Dean Rauch, 79, died Aug. 22, 2007, in Vancouver.
Rauch was born Oct. 13, 1927, in Roca, NE. He came to the northwest as an Army soldier at Fort Lewis and decided to settle in the area. He was a longtime resident of Woodland. He worked as the community telephone man for 48 years, retiring at age 72.
In retirement, Rauch enjoyed spending time with family members, especially his grandchildren.
Rauch was preceded in death by his wife, Magdalene Rauch, in 1995. Survivors include son Bruce Rauch of Vancouver, daughters Nancy Armstrong of Idaho, and Julie Rauch, Emily Richards and Jill Rauch, all of Vancouver, brother Leland Rauch of Oregon, 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

BOBBY RAY
Bobby Lee Ray, 72, died June 5, 2007, in Vancouver.
Ray was born June 28, 1934, in Pontotoc, Mississippi, and moved to the northwest in 1941. He lived in La Center for 38 years.
Ray enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a devoted family man. He adored his two dogs, Mr. T and Dare. He worked as a truck driver, primarily for Interstate Motor Lines.
Ray served in the Army during the Korean War.
Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Ann Ray, in 2002. They had married in 1957. He was also preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. Survivors include sons Michael McFarlane, Thomas McFarlane and Bobby Lee Ray, all of Portland, Marvin Ray of Woodland and David Ray of Vancouver, daughters Christine Reeder of Portland and Charlene Crawford of Vancouver, brother Billy Ray of Portland, sister Carolyn Green of Portland, 21 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, with Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home, Vancouver, in charge of arrangements.
FIRLE REDBURN
Firle Jean (Selle) Redburn, 73, died Dec. 4, 2006, in Battle Ground.
Redburn was born Jan. 21, 1933, in Spokane, and lived in Battle Ground for 47 years.
Redburn worked as a bank teller at First Federal Savings and Loan in Battle Ground.
Survivors include widower Donald Redburn, at home in Battle Ground, sons Byron Redburn of Alaska and Paul Redburn of Japan, daughters Laura Hall and Julie Olstead, both of Battle Ground, sisters Ronale Anson of Alaska and Donna Fields of Idaho, 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

MARY REED
Mary “Alice” Reed, 91, died May 26, 2007, in Portland.
Reed was born June 4, 1915, in Amboy, grew up in Amboy, and lived the past two years in Portland.
Reed had worked as a housekeeper.
Survivors include nieces Barbara Zamorano and Beverly Schulte, both of Vancouver, and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Graveside services were held at Mt. View Cemetery, Amboy, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.
GRACE RICE
Grace Vada (Harper) Rice, 99, of Ridgefield, died Feb. 21, 2008, at the Ray Hickey Hospice House in Vancouver.
Rice was born Jan. 29,1909, in Hickman, NE. She lived in Nebraska until 1938 when she and her husband Albert “Bert” Rice moved to Ridgefield. They lived in Ridgefield for 70 years.
She enjoyed being with her family and playing dominos. She grew a vegetable and flower garden and had a garden until last year. She sponsored Latin American child care and was a member of Mountain View Christian Center. Rice had worked in canneries with the Washington Co-op.
Survivors include her daughter, Alena McCuistion, of Ridgefield, 14 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
Rice was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Rice, daughters Betty Ruth Fields and Alberta Jean Hensley, grandsons Wilson Heasley and Larry Fields, a sister, and two brothers.
A funeral service will begin Sat., March 1, 11 a.m., Mountain View Christian Center, with burial in Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Vancouver.

WALLY RISTO
Wally Risto, 96, died Feb. 23, 2007, in Battle Ground.
Risto was born May 19, 1910, in the Gravel Point area of Battle Ground, and lived his entire life in Battle Ground. He graduated from Battle Ground High School in 1928 where he played baseball. In 1933 he tried out for a professional baseball team and was accepted into the New York Yankees farm team. He returned home, however, to help his mother on the farm.
Risto pursued a career in music as a drummer. He met his wife, Edna Martenson, in 1934 at a grange hall dance in Venersborg. He was the drummer and she played the piano. They were married in 1942.
Risto raised sheep on his Gravel Point farm for 60 years. He sold wool to the Pendleton Woolen Mills for many years.
In 1950, Risto went to work as a clerk in the feed department of Clark County Dairymen’s Cooperative which eventually became Agco. In 1956 he became the manager of the hardware store. He retired in 1972.
Risto was considered the man to call if your well pump, milking machine or other farm equipment needed to be replaced.
Risto was well known for his dance band. He and Edna played big band, western swing and Scandinavian music in ballrooms, grange halls, private gatherings, senior centers and nursing homes for over 60 years. In the early years, they were known as Wally Risto’s Orchestra. During the last 20 years they were called the Risto Kats.
Risto enjoyed visiting with people. He loved baseball and was an avid reader of baseball books. One of his favorite activities was watching baseball on television.
Risto was preceded in death by brothers Walfird Risto, Verner Risto and Vive Risto, sister Vienna Risto, and daughter Anne Marie Risto. Survivors include widow Edna Risto of Battle Ground, son Donald Risto of Vancouver, daughter Elena Risto of Nevada, and four grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Sat., March 3, 2 p.m., at Gravel Point Cemetery, located at 194th Ave. and Risto Rd., Battle Ground, followed by a reception at 3 p.m. at the Battle Ground Senior Center, 113 NE 3rd Ave., Battle Ground.

RICHARD AND HELEN ROBBINS
Richard Edgar Robbins, 73, and Helen Maxine Robbins, 68, died in a vehicle accident Jan. 20, 2007, on Lewis River Road east if Woodland.
Richard Robbins was born Jan. 13, 1934, in Woodland. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was known around Cougar as the “mayor,” or the man who lived in the area the longest. He enjoyed going to the Cougar Store to talk with friends daily. He drove a log truck for many years and owned a gas station in Cougar at one time. He loved the mountains, fishing, hunting and seeing animals.
Helen (Hall) Robbins was born July 10, 1938, in Oswego, KS. She was known as the best clam fryer in the northwest. She loved the mountains, fishing, going out to dinner, dressing up and taking care of herself. She cooked full-course meals. She never had a bad word to say about anyone.
Both grew up in the mountains east of Woodland.
Survivors include daughters Barbara Barker of Oregon and Laura Tsugawa of Woodland, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Richard is also survived by sister Donna Adams of Texas, while Helen is survived by sisters Darlene McDonald and Violet Gusinow, both of Arizona.
A funeral service is set for Thurs., Feb. 8, noon, at the Pleasant Valley Community Church, 14756 Lewis River Rd., Yale, with the Woodland Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
BERNIE ROBERTS
Bernie Lee Roberts, 70, died Jan. 10, 2008, in Bend, OR.
Roberts was born July 26, 1937, in Portland, graduated from Franklin High School in 1955, and lived in Woodland, Cougar and Vancouver for about 30 years. He lived the last 10 years in LaPine, OR.
Roberts owned the Cougar Hotel and Snowmobile business for five years. He owned a Yamaha shop and Suzuki shop in Vancouver. He always strived for perfection. He enjoyed people and sales. He earned an honorable discharge from the National Guard.
Roberts volunteered with Air Life of Bend, The Oregon Department of Transportation, and Deschutes County sheriff’s office. He worked to get an airport in LaPine.
Survivors include widow Darlene Roberts of LaPine, OR, son Randy Roberts of Ocean Shores, daughter Debi Lanphear of Woodland, sisters Susan Fry of Oregon and Marilyn Ford of Portland, and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Fri., Jan. 18, 3 p.m., at Woodland Christian Church, 430 Buckeye, Woodland, with Deschutes Memorial Chapel and Gardens, Bend, OR, in charge of arrangements.
DELWIN RODERICK
Delwin “Del” Keith Roderick, 64, died of cirrhosis of the liver and hepatitis May 1, 2008, in Vancouver.
Roderick was born April 16, 1944, in Toppenish, lived in Battle Ground 1946-1973, then Vancouver 1974-2000, and returned to Battle Ground in 2001.
Roderick graduated from Columbia Adventist Academy. He was a member of the Meadow Glade Seventh-day Adventist Church. He worked for the Bonneville Power Administration at construction sites in the northwest. He also worked for Universal Excavators on various projects including the Vancouver Mall, I-5 widening and multiple subdivisions.
Roderick was preceded in death by his father, Emmett Roderick, in 1995, and step-father, Ernest Cornelius, in 2004. Survivors include widow Marie Roderick of Battle Ground, mother Ruby Roderick Cornelius of Battle Ground, sisters Annetta Wood and Darlene Schmitz, both of Battle Ground, sons Tony Roderick of Connecticut and Chris Roderick of California, step-sons Sean Flohaug and Jason Sullivan, both of Vancouver, four grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.

ROY ROBERTS
Roy Roberts, 89, a longtime resident of Kelly Hill, Yacolt, died Sept. 20, 2006, in Vancouver.
Roberts was born Feb. 3, 1917, in Eureka, MT, moved to Canada with his family, and then moved, at age 16, to Washington. He lived in the Mary’s Corner/Toledo area. He worked in portable sawmills. At age 23 he moved to Chelatchie Prairie. He lived in Fargher Lake, Kelly Hill, Woodland and Brush Prairie. He was among the first crew to log Tum Tum Mountain. He later worked in farming.
Roberts is remembered as a hard-working man. He enjoyed whittling, playing the guitar and singing.
Roberts was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Iona Mae (Powell) Roberts, in 1999, two brothers, two sisters, two infant sons, grandson Troy York in 2005 and oldest son Arthur Roy Roberts on Aug. 29, 2006. Survivors include daughters Ellen Smith of Kelso, Mavis Osborne of Longview, Viola York of Battle Ground, Laura Edholm of Woodland and Linda Hayes of Chehalis, sons John Roberts of Centralia, Gilbert Roberts of Woodland and Charles Roberts of Idaho, 24 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and special friend Anita Smith of Hazel Dell.
Cremation ashes will be buried Sat., Oct. 21, 10 a.m., at Brush Prairie Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at Maple Grove Church, 12700 NE 199th St., Battle Ground, at noon.

ROBERTA ROGERS
Roberta Ann (Britzman) Rogers, 79, died June 25, 2008, in Ocean Park after a long battle with cancer.
Rogers was born May 8, 1929, in Jamestown, ND, and moved with her family to Orchards where she grew up. She retired from the Washington State School for the Blind in Vancouver and moved to Ocean Park.
Rogers enjoyed her many trips to Alaska, fishing and exploring. On one outing, she caught her limit of eleven silvers. She made several sturgeon trips, limiting out. She was bitten by the gold bug and spent many hours on dredge tailings, streams, and sand bars of Alaska, and deserts of California, Arizona and Nevada.
Rogers was preceded in death by sons Kenneth Anderson and Thomas Akey, and sister Betty Meisner. Survivors include husband John Rogers of Ocean Park, sons Gary Anderson of Lyle, Carl Anderson of Battle Ground and Jack Akey of Aberdeen, daughters Betty Anderson of Battle Ground, Carol Walling of Oregon and Jacquelyn Schull of Alaska, step-children Patty Fisher, Larry Rogers, John Rogers Jr., David Lawrence, Susan Sonag, Linda Zerimba, Kathy Sube, and Judy Craine, sister Ilah Tester of Prosser, 31 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Tues., July 1, 1 p.m., at Bethel Lutheran Church in Orchards, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.
BRANDON ROMINE
Brandon Ray Romine, 23, died March 14, 2007, in Portland.
Romine was born Oct. 22, 1983, in Spokane, and lived in Clark County for 18 years, the last 11 years in Brush Prairie.
Romine attended Hockinson Middle School and graduated from Prairie High School. He collected knives. He enjoyed skateboarding and shooting. He was a handyman.
Romine worked in pole barn construction.
Survivors include widow Katie Romine, at home, sons Dylan Romine and Seth Romine, at home, mother Crystel Hayes of Brush Prairie, father Steven Romine of Colorado, brother Shawn Romine of Oregon, and grandparents Ray and Rose Jorgensen of Brush Prairie and Ray and Kari Irvin of Spokane.

ONA RONING
Ona Grace (Conner) Roning, 91, died June 8, 2008, in Vancouver. Roning was born April 2, 1917, in Slope County, ND, and lived in Clark County for 85 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Vancouver. She enjoyed knitting, gardening, traveling and making quilts for her family. Roning was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Edward Roning, in 1991, daughter Barbara Fakler, brother Ivan Conner and sister Merna Perdue. Survivors include daughters Caryl Lematta of Port Ludlow and Deborah Walz of Ridgefield, son James Roning of Tennessee, 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. HELEN ROOD
Helen Ida (Filla) Rood, 89, died Jan. 9, 2008, in Vancouver.
Rood was born June 20, 1918, in Portland. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Portland and the United Finnish Kaleva Brothers and Sisters. She enjoyed gardening. She made two trips to Finland to visit relatives.
Rood was preceded in death by her first husband of 28 years, Arne Reijonen, second husband Bob Rood after 38 years of marriage, and daughter Betty Mackey. Survivors include sons Albert Reijonen of Portland and Bobby Reijonen of Woodland, daughters Esther Chambers and Bonnie Reijonen, both of Woodland, brother Eino Filla of La Center, sister Gertie O’Brien of Woodland, 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

STEPHEN ROOT
Stephen Michael Timothy Root, 27, died Sept. 26, 2007, in Vancouver.
Root was born Sept. 23, 1980, in Vancouver. He suffered a brain aneurysm at age 16.
Root loved Jesus, basketball and music. He was disabled.
Survivors include parents Rick and Gayle Root, at home in Vancouver, brothers Jonathan Root and Ben Root, sisters Johanna Root and Sarah Root, and grandparents Stephen and Laura Root of Battle Ground and George and Marian Rothacher of Ohio.
Interment was at Lewisville Cemetery, Battle Ground, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.
JOHN ROSE
John Edwin Rose, 88, died Dec. 20, 2006, in Battle Ground.
Rose was born July 17, 1918, in Vancouver, and was a lifelong resident of Clark County, living the past three months in Battle Ground.
Rose attended Ridgefield Church of the Nazarene for 40 years. He was a member of the Pekin Ferry Grange. He was a Master Gardener. He enjoyed going to SNAP luncheons and was a sports fan. He particularly enjoyed the Mariners. He liked golfing, bowling and traveling, and loved to laugh with his grandchildren. He enjoyed being around people.
Rose was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Rose, in 2004, son Wesley Lowrey in 2004, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Survivors include daughters Cleona McMahon of Amboy and Annette Ezetta of Battle Ground, sons Kenny Bond of Battle Ground and John Rose of Spokane, 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Fri., Dec. 29, 11 a.m., at Ridgefield Church of the Nazarene, Ridgefield, with interment at 2 p.m. that day at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, is in charge of arrangements.
DONALD ROSENOW
Donald Rosenow, 77, died Oct. 28, 2007, in Battle Ground.
Rosenow was born March 16, 1930, in Hillsboro, OR, and lived in Clark County for 50 years, the past two months in Battle Ground.
Rosenow loved the outdoors, driving in the country, his grandchildren, helping friends and family, and talking to anybody. He was known as “Mr. Dependable.”
Rosenow worked as a mail contractor for the U.S. Postal Service.
Survivors include widow Dorothy “Nanny” Rosenow, at home, son Jimmie Wilber of California, daughter Sherry Primley of Battle Ground, brother Glen Rosenow of Oregon, six grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild on the way.
