JOHN PALENSKY
John R. Palensky, 63, died Aug. 3, 2007, in Battle Ground.
Palensky was born Dec. 12, 1943, in Tullahoma, TN. He grew up in Idaho and lived in Battle Ground since 1975.
Palensky earned a bachelor’s degree in wildlife management from the University of Montana and a master’s degree in fisheries science from Oregon State University. He was also a graduate of the Oregon Military Academy and retired as a captain from the Oregon National Guard.
Palensky worked as a biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and as a fisheries biologist for the Federal Power Commission, later known as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. He also worked for the Bonneville Power Administration in various capacities, including environmental coordinator, director of the Fish and Wildlife Division and special assistant to the administrator. He retired from Bonneville Power in 1996 after 22 years and worked as a consultant in the fish and wildlife field. In the 1970s, he worked during summers in commercial fishing with the Pacific City Dory Fleet in Oregon.
Palensky was a member of the board of Water Watch of Oregon. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing for salmon and steelhead and fly fishing for trout. He also enjoyed birding, gardening and traveling, particularly in the northwest and Alaska.
Survivors include widow Maria Palensky, at home in Battle Ground, sons Michael Palensky of Vancouver and Jeff Palensky of Olympia, and daughter Lynn Palensky of Portland.
A memorial service will be held Mon., Sept. 24, 7 p.m., at the World Forestry Center, located at the Portland Zoo in Portland. The Vancouver Funeral Home handled cremation arrangements.
VIVIAN PARIS
Vivian Esther (Quast) Paris, 71, died Oct. 30, 2006, in Battle Ground.
Paris was born April 21, 1935, in Bismarck, ND. She worked as a field boss in area berry and bean fields. She juggled working with being a mother. She loved the Portland Trailblazers. She collected salt and pepper shakers. She became known as the “Can Lady” when she collected and recycled aluminum cans from along roadsides.
Paris worked at Tiger Bowl in Battle Ground from 1971 until the early 1990s. She also worked in the deli at Zupan’s Market. She lived the last six years of her life at Parkway North Care Center in Battle Ground.
Paris was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Paris, in 1973, and granddaughter Renee Paris in 2005. Survivors include sons Steven Paris of Illinois and Paul Paris of Battle Ground, daughters Valerie Weisenborn and Rosemarie Paris, both of Battle Ground, brother Bradley Quast of Battle Ground, 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Sat., Nov. 11, 1 p.m., at Bethel Lutheran Church, 12919 NE 159th St., Brush Prairie, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.
REGINA MARIE PARKER
Regina Marie (Hammer) Parker, 52, died Jan. 9, 2008 at home in Yacolt.
Parker was born Sept. 10, 1955, in Canton, Ohio and grew up in North Canton and Canton. She attended Our Lady of Peace Catholic School, graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in 1973, and received a technical degree in office management from Stark Technical Institute in Canton.
She married Jimmy Parker on Dec. 18, 1978 in Canton, and the couple raised three boys. She worked as a legal assistant and enjoyed several hobbies, including horses, fishing and sewing. She had many pet dogs, cats, birds and fish. She also was very dedicated to her late parents.
Family members said Parker had an infectious sense of humor and will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
Survivors include widower Jimmy Parker, at home in Yacolt, sons Jacob Parker and Aaron Parker, both of Yacolt, and Benjamin Parker of Battle Ground, brothers Thomas Hammer of Oregon, and Robert Hammer, Charles Hammer, John Hammer and James Hammer, all of Ohio, two grandsons and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Funeral services are scheduled for Sat., Jan. 19, 4 p.m., at Layne’s Funeral Home, 16 NE Clark Ave., Battle Ground. Her cremated remains will be buried in Canton, Ohio with her parents.
DWIGHT PARRISH
Dwight Waldon Parrish, 65, died March 8, 2007, in Battle Ground.
Parrish was born April 28, 1941, in Minneapolis, MN, and lived in Minnesota and Wisconsin before moving to Clark County about 16 years ago. He recently moved to Battle Ground.
Parrish enjoyed flying planes and had previously owned a plane. He also enjoyed woodworking, traveling and spending time with his family and friends.
Parrish had worked as a maintenance mechanic at Leatherman Tool Group in Portland.
Parrish was preceded in death by his father Harry Parrish in 1963, and mother Phoebe Parrish in January 2007. Survivors include widow Ivy Parrish of Battle Ground, daughters Natalie Guti of Battle Ground and Julie Ortin of La Center, brothers Ray Parrish of Vancouver, Jim Parrish of New Hampshire and David Parrish of Minnesota, sister Lola Cottew of Minnesota, three grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Northwood Park Funeral Home was in charge of cremation and other arrangements.
DAVID PATTERSON
David Wayne Patterson, 54, died May 23, 2008, in Vancouver.
Patterson was born Feb. 15, 1954, in Vancouver, and lived in the Vancouver area his entire life.
Patterson attended Columbia Adventist Academy in Battle Ground through the eleventh grade, then graduated from Battle Ground High School in 1972. He earned a college degree in engineering and worked for manufacturing companies, including Sulzer Pumps. He implemented new ideas that saved time and money for the companies he worked for.
Patterson learned woodworking from his father. He enjoyed taking Harley motorcycle trips with his wife, Denise, and friends, and he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Survivors include wife Denise Patterson, at home in Vancouver, daughter Sharesa Hollins of Battle Ground, son Nathan Patterson of Battle Ground, step-daughter Natacha Landsverk of Vancouver, brothers Russell Patterson of Idaho and Dean Patterson of Vancouver, four grandchildren, and close friend Bill Winston of Nevada.

MARGARET PATTEN
Margaret “Margy” M. Kirsch (Wade) Patten, 80, died July 27, 2007, in Battle Ground.
Patten was born Sept. 29, 1926, in Seaview, worked as a cashier for retail grocery, and lived most of her life on the Long Beach Peninsula before moving to Battle Ground in 1961.
Patten enjoyed spending time with family and friends, bowling, playing pinochle and taking trips to Spirit Mountain. She last lived at St. Helens Manor in Battle Ground.
Patten was preceded in death by her husband, Dick Kirsch, in 1966, daughter Sharon Foster in 1978, and great-granddaughter Paige Stern in 1995. Survivors include daughters Kathy Marsolek of Brush Prairie and Barbara of Battle Ground, son Rick Kirsch of Vancouver, 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
No services are planned, with interment at Ilwaco Cemetery. Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, is in charge of arrangements.
WILLIAM PAUL
William R. Paul, 78, died March 2, 2007, in Woodland.
Paul was born Dec. 6, 1928, in Woodland, and lived in Woodland all his life.
Paul owned Paul Logging, a company his father started. He enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include widow Marian Paul of Woodland, sons Gary Paul and Dick Paul, both of Woodland, daughter Cheryl Ortmann of Woodland, brother James Paul of Woodland, sister Virginia Ham of Woodland, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Burial was at Frank Abel Cemetery, Woodland, with the Woodland Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
JOHN PEACHER
John Thomas Peacher, 72, died Nov. 2, 2006, in Woodland.
Peacher was born Feb. 25, 1934, in Epping, ND, and moved to Woodland in 1967. He worked for the city of Williston, ND for 10 years, and then at PWT in Ridgefield for 24 years.
Peacher enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping. He loved feeding the birds and squirrels. He playing the guitar, banjo, accordion and mandolin, especially Scandinavian, country-western and blue grass music.
Peacher enjoyed fixing motors and small appliances, and doing woodwork. He is remembered as a loyal friend.
Survivors include widow Isabel, at home in Woodland, sons Norman Peacher of Vancouver, Doug Peacher and Tom Peacher, both of Woodland, and David Peacher of Bremerton, daughter Marie Bennett of Oregon, brothers Alonzo Peacher of Montana, Leonard Peacher of North Dakota, and Paul Peacher of Arizona, sisters Georgina of Minnesota and Daisy, 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Sat., Nov. 11, 11 a.m., at Woodland Funeral Home, followed by a reception at Clover Valley Community Church, 3212 Lewis River Rd., Woodland.

RICHARD PEARSON
Richard Wayne Pearson, 66, died Sept. 27, 2007, in Vancouver.
Pearson was born May 28, 1941, in Montpelier, Idaho, grew up in Ridgefield, and lived in Clark County for 45 years, last at Battle Ground.
Pearson served in the Army National Guard. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trips to the beach and spending time with his family. He had worked as a commercial electrician.
Survivors include widow Verna Pearson, at home, sons Alan Pearson of Portland, Steve Pearson of Brush Prairie and Doug Pearson of Vancouver, daughter Jodi Miller of Oregon, brothers Fred Pearson and George Pearson, both of Vancouver, and numerous grandchildren.

KATHERINE PELDO
Katherine H. (Weitala) Peldo, 83, died Nov. 19, 2006, in Sturgis, SD.
Peldo was born Feb. 24, 1923, in Dickey County, ND, and lived in Vancouver and Battle Ground before moving to South Dakota in 2001. She and her husband, Arvo Peldo, had farmed in North Dakota and New York Mills, Minnesota until 1957 when they moved to Minneapolis, MN. They moved to Vancouver in 1972.
Peldo was a member of the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church since 1946.
Peldo was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Arvo Peldo, in 1999, and a brother, a sister, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Survivors include sister Mildred Steinwand of Wyoming, brother Delbert Weitala of South Dakota, sons Richard Peldo, Randy Peldo, Ralph Peldo, all of Vancouver, Robert Peldo of Montana, and Ronald Peldo and Roger Peldo, both of South Dakota, daughters Sandra Leetch of Vancouver, Deanna Williamson of South Dakota, and MaryAnn Roberts and Sonia Hartjenstein, both of South Dakota, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and Christian friends.
Burial was at Elim Cemetery, Brush Prairie, with Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish, SD, and Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.
CHARLES PENN-BLACK
Charles David Penn-Black, 49, died July 15, 2007, in Portland.
Black was born Dec. 14, 1957, in Vancouver, grew up in Yacolt and attended Battle Ground schools.
Black became an expert rifleman in the Army and was trained to repair aircraft armament. He was stationed in Korea.
Black spent much of his adult life working from town to town. He enjoyed California. He lived in Yacolt 1984-1990.
Black enjoyed family trips, including a Caribbean cruise in 2000.
Black was preceded in death by his step-father Robert Penn in 2005, and his father Dick Madden. Survivors include mother Doris Penn of Vancouver, sisters Kay Vail and Pati Penn, both of Vancouver, Kathe Dodgin of Yacolt, Julia Lake of Portland, and Leanne Smith and Nina Greely, both of California, and nieces and nephews.
The family is thankful for the support and friendship of caregiver Anne Lopez.

CLAUDIA PERKINS
Claudia Leora (Powell) Beebe Perkins, 69, died April 5, 2008, in Clarkston.
Perkins was born May 27, 1939, in Vancouver, and graduated from Columbia Academy in Meadow Glade in 1958. She married Robert Beebe in 1958. The couple lived in Amboy.
Perkins was considered a giving person and made friends easily.
In 1986, Perkins moved to Home Valley, WA, where she lived for 12 years. She was active in the Carson Bible Church. In 1998, she moved to Culdesac and was active in the Culdesac Community Church.
After the death of her husband in 2003, Perkins married Charlie Perkins in 2004 and lived in Culdesac. They both passed away in April 2008.
Perkins enjoyed events in Culdesac including the Angel Barn. She loved music and being around people.
Perkins was preceded in death by her husbands, Bob Beebe and Charlie Perkins, son Yancy Beebe, granddaughters Mandy Beebe, father George Powell, and brother Larry Powell. Survivors include mother Vera Powell, sons Ricky Beebe, Craig Beebe, Chuck Perkins and Keith Perkins, daughters Beatrice Jacobson, Bernita Trotter, Claudina Campbell, and Karen Perkins, brother Vern Powell, sister Naidia Orr, 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
HARLEY PERRY
Harley Steven Perry, 4, died Aug, 27, 2007, in Portland.
Perry was born Oct. 5, 2002, in Vancouver, and lived his life in Clark County, the last two years in Vancouver.
Perry enjoyed being outdoors. He had a bubbly personality, enjoyed video games, Dukes of Hazard, Etch-A-Sketch, coloring and drawing.
Perry was preceded in death by great-grandfather Charles Weller. CHELSEA PETERSON
Chelsea Laine Peterson, 18, died in an automobile accident Nov. 12, 2006, in Newberg, OR.
Peterson was born June 28, 1988, in Portland. She lived in Brush Prairie until moving to McMinnville, OR three months ago to attend Linfield College.
Peterson graduated with honors from Hockinson High School in 2006. She played basketball and was team captain. She was involved with student leadership and was a member of the National Honor Society.
Survivors include parents James and Cathy Peterson, at home in Brush Prairie, sisters Cori Masters of Arizona and Casea Peterson, at home in Brush Prairie, grandparents Glen and Elaine Collins of Florida and Peter and Dawn Weston-Webb of Sequim, and uncle Cody Peterson of Graham.

PHILLIS PETERSON
Phillis Lee (Williams) Peterson, 85, died Aug. 18, 2007, in Vancouver.
Peterson was born Feb. 28, 1922, in Eades, CO, and lived in Battle Ground for 25 years before moving to Vancouver 1 1/2 years ago.
Peterson had strong political positions. She enjoyed people, NASCAR racing, music, painting and artwork. She also enjoyed her family. She was a licensed practical nurse.
Peterson was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Peterson, in 2005. Survivors include daughter Marta Womack of Vancouver, brothers James Williams and Glenn Fordyce, both of Battle Ground, sister Edith Harris of Battle Ground, two grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

MICHAEL PIERCE
Michael R. Pierce, 54, died Aug. 4, 2007, at home in Vancouver.
Pierce was born Jan. 29, 1953, in Vancouver. He attended Battle Ground schools through the twelfth grade. He had lived in Tacoma and Vancouver over the years.
Pierce enjoyed working on cars. He collected models of most any kind of car made in the 1960s and 1970s.
Pierce was preceded in death by his twin brother, Rick Pierce, in 2000, and mother Roberta Squires in 2003. Survivors include sister Vickie Gaines of Vancouver, brothers Kevin Pierce of Vancouver, Ron Squires of Amboy and Kasey Squires of Battle Ground, father John R. Pierce of Nevada, and step-father Darrell Squires of Battle Ground.
A casual memorial service will be held Fri., Aug. 17, 3:30 p.m., at Lewisville Park, Juniper Section. Those attending are asked to bring a food item and their own chair.

SUSAN PIETILA
Susan (Coffel) Pietila, 61, died April 12, 2007, in Vancouver.
Pietila was born Sept. 6, 1945, in Ilwaco, and lived in Clark County for 43 years, the past 20 years in Brush Prairie.
Pietila enjoyed shopping, meeting people, animals and her grandchildren.
Survivors include widower Alan Pietila, at home, father Smokey Pfifer of Long Beach, son Mark Pietila of Brush Prairie, daughter Robyn Northrup of Kalama, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

THELMA PIFER
Thelma Eleanor (Strawn) Pifer, 92, died April 12, 2007, in Battle Ground.
Pifer was born Feb. 12, 1914, in Graysville, TN, graduated from high school in Pittsburgh, PA, married Harvey Pifer in Miami, FL, on Christmas Eve 1938, and moved to Lowell, OR in 1943. She moved to Battle Ground in 1946.
Pifer enjoyed traveling, reading and gardening. She also enjoyed music and hummed hymns until the day before she died. She was artistic and musically inclined. She had traveled throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. She came from a family of brothers who played guitar, banjo and mandolin; she played the ukulele as a young person.
Pifer kept busy volunteering at the Battle Ground Service Center and stuffing envelopes at International Children’s Care orphanages headquarters.
Thelma and Harvey Pifer renewed their vows on their 50th wedding anniversary.
Pifer had worked as a nurses aid at hospitals in Clark County and at the Meadow Glade nursing home.
Pifer suffered from Alzheimers for many years.
Pifer was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and one great-grandchild. Survivors include widower Harvey Pifer of Battle Ground, daughters Ina Tichenor of Ridgefield, Suzanne Myers of Silver Lake and Eleanor Pallay and Caroline Hansen, both of Battle Ground, son Clifford Pifer of Battle Ground, 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Sandra Lee (Pike) Calderella, 63, died April 5, 2007, in Vancouver.
Calderella was born Dec. 19, 1943, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, graduated from Pittsfield High School, and worked for the General Electric Company.
Calderella lived in Ariel since 1970. She enjoyed crocheting, afghans, quilting, sewing, reading and crafts.
Survivors include widower Butch Calderella, at home in Ariel, daughters Tammy Nowatchik and Heather Jackson, both of Woodland, and Andrea Calderella of Vancouver, sister Linda Duchesneau of Massachusetts, two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

PATRICK PHILLIPS
Patrick Darrell Phillips, 78, died Feb. 8, 2008, in Vancouver.
Phillips was born Dec. 26, 1929, in Hibbing, MN, and lived in Clark County for 10 years, the last 18 months in Vancouver. He lived in Portland for 25 years.
Phillips served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He attended St. Patrick’s grade school and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1947. He was interested in “Slab Town” Boys. He enjoyed golfing, horses and Rottweiler dogs. He loved the car business. He worked as an auction manager in the auto industry.
Phillips was preceded in death by his wife, Jacky Phillips. Survivors include sons Scott Meyers of Vancouver and Corey Meyers of Alaska, brother Don Phillips of Oregon, and numerous nieces and nephews.

JOSEPHINE PRATT
Josephine Elizabeth (Addison) Pratt, 69, died Dec. 28, 2006, in Kelso.
Pratt was born April 27, 1937, in Houston, TX, lived in Oakland, CA for many years, in Battle Ground for 22 years, and recently to Longview.
Pratt worked as a child care provided. She owned a janitorial service in Portland with her husband.
Survivors include husband Bolden Pratt of Kelso, sons Maurice DeGrate Sr. of Longview, Jonathon Eddington of Oregon, and Bolden N. GORDON PRESCOTT
Gordon Hedges Prescott, 86, died March 5, 2007, in Vancouver.
Prescott was born July 7, 1920, in Helena, MT. He lived in Clark County for 12 years, the last eight years in Brush Prairie.
Prescott served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as a life insurance salesman for 45 years. He enjoyed fishing, and playing blackjack and Texas hold ‘em.
Prescott was preceded in death by son Gordon “Biff” Prescott. Survivors include widow Katie Prescott, at home, sons Bruce Prescott of Port Orchard and Brian Prescott of Arizona, step-son J. Alex Gottwig of Vancouver, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

WILLIAM PRESTON
William Melvin Preston, 91, died Sept. 6, 2007, in Vancouver.
Preston was born Aug. 10, 1916, in Filley, MO, moved to Bozeman, Montana in 1928, and then to Minnesota in 1937. He attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, and worked in appliance repair.
Preston was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He enjoyed fishing, working with wood and square dancing.
Preston was preceded in death by his first wife, Flo Preston, in 1973, second wife Iva Preston in 2000, sisters Gladys Lewis in 1974 and Leeta Richardson in 2002, and brothers Bob Preston in 1971, Lloyd Preston in 1975, Ben Preston in 1977 and Tom Preston in 1942. Survivors include son Jerry Preston of Ohio, daughter Mary Preston of Wisconsin, step-son Larry Unger of Minnesota, step-daughter Connie Petty of Battle Ground, brother Abe Preston of Oklahoma, and five grandchildren.
Interment was at Kasson, Minnesota, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.
BRANDEN PRISON
Memorial services for Branden John Prison, 20, will be held Sat., Aug. 4, 2 p.m., at the home of Mike and Johnnie Ferriaolo, 9921 NE 246th Circle, Battle Ground.
Prison, son of Terry and John Prison of Battle Ground, died July 22, 2007, in a motorcycle accident in Virginia.
Prison graduated from Battle Ground High School in 2006. He attended Northwest Lineman’s school in Idaho and was doing electrical apprentice work in Virginia. Those attending the memorial service are invited to wear blue.

Nancy Lee (Perry) Propper, 68, died Nov. 2, 2007, in Woodland.
Propper was born Feb. 2, 1939, in Los Angeles, CA, lived in Portland, and lived the last 13 years in Woodland. She graduated from Ridgefield High School.
Propper enjoyed camping and going to the beach. She had worked as an apartment manager in the Portland metro area.
Survivors include husband of 55 years Robert Propper, at home, sons Kenneth Propper of Ridgefield, Larry Propper of Portland, James Propper of Vancouver and Charles Propper of Longview, daughters Gail Nelson of Illinois, Gladys Propper of Ridgefield, and Rose Weiderich of Woodland, brother Alan Ecklund of La Center, sisters Mary Carrol of La Center, Lucy Fletcher of Longview, Pat Cook of Woodland, Ethel Kamey of Rosburg, and Stella Campbell of Oregon, 39 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and 27 great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Tues., Nov. 6, 1 p.m., at Memory Memorial Park Cemetery, Vancouver, with the Woodland Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
FRANK PUMPHREY
Frank M. Pumphrey, 59, died May 2, 2007, in La Center.
Pumphrey was born in Centralia, and lived in Clark County for 47 years.
Pumphrey graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in engineering. He was a member of the Professional Land Surveyor’s of Oregon, and a charter member of the Battle Ground Elks Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, camping, and reading, and hiking and driving in the forests.
Pumphrey was preceded in death by sister Lynne Ketola in 1997. Survivors include widow Joann Pumphrey, at home, sister Ruth Pumphrey, sister-in-law Sharon Kolbe, brothers-in-law Ed, Roy and Darrell Dix, and two nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date, with Brown’s Funeral Home, Camas, in charge of arrangements.
