BETTY JACKSON
Betty Josephine (Perry) Jackson, 82, died May 31, 2008, in Woodland. Jackson was born Dec. 29, 1925, in McKinney, TX, lived in Venice, CA for 50 years, and then in Woodland for 18 years. Jackson loved to sew and made clothes for her daughters as they grew up. She enjoyed shopping, going on drives and going out to eat. She was considered an excellent cook. She was a member of the Venice Baptist Church where she worked on youth programs. She also attended the Woodland Baptist Church. She enjoyed being with people. Jackson was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Howling Jackson, in 2001, and daughter Betty Claudette Jackson in 1965. Survivors include daughter Diane Elliott of Woodland, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Sat., June 14, 11 a.m., at Woodland Baptist Church, 1808 Lewis River Rd., Woodland, with interment at Frank Abel Cemetery, Woodland. Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, is in charge of arrangements.

EDNA JACOBS
Edna May (Thompson) Jacobs, 87, died June 22, 2008, at home in La Center.

Jacobs was born Dec. 15, 1920, in Omaha, Nebraska. She married Henry Jacobs in 1957.

Jacobs loved her family and friends, dogs, horses and horse racing.

Survivors include widower Bob Jacobs, at home in La Center, daughter Michelle Haynes of La Center, son LeRoy McCutchan of North Dakota, 10 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

No services are planned at this time, with Cascadia Cremation and Burial Services in charge of arrangements.

KENNETH JACOBS


Kenneth Arthur Jacobs, 72, died May 16, 2008, in Yacolt.


Jacobs was born Dec. 29, 1935, in Zillah, and lived in Clark County for 48 years, the last 47 in Yacolt.


Jacobs was a charter member of the Yacolt Evangelical Free Church and enjoyed teaching Sunday School. He was also a member of the Yacolt Sportsmen’s Club, and C.O.W.S. Club. He was a former member of the Yacolt town council. He operated a metal fabrication shop in Yacolt. He was a hobby beekeeper. He taught archery and enjoyed hunting and bird watching. He also enjoyed gardening, especially raising tomatoes, and playing computer solitaire.


Jacobs had worked as a millwright in construction.


Survivors include wife of 50 years Betty Jacobs, at home, sons Nathan Jacobs of Olympia, Max Jacobs of Vancouver and Todd Jacobs of View, daughters Zada Hazen of Yacolt and Kena Jacobs of Portland, brothers Frank Jacobs of Vancouver, James Jacobs of Yacolt and John Jacobs of Portland, sisters Clara Olson of Yakima and Roberta Leingang of Vancouver, 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.


Memorial services will be held Sat., May 31, 3 p.m., at Yacolt Evangelical Free Church, Yacolt. Viewing is set for Thurs., May 22, 6-8 p.m., at Layne’s Funeral Home Chapel, Battle Ground. Graveside services will be held Fri., May 23, 2 p.m., at Yacolt Cemetery, Yacolt, with Layne’s Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

BILL JANSSEN
William Henry “Bill” Janssen, 64, died Feb. 22, 2007, in Battle Ground.
Born May 29, 1942 in Vancouver, Janssen lived for almost his entire life in Vancouver and Battle Ground. He and his wife founded The Collector Nursery near Battle Ground about 20 years ago. They moved from Vancouver and became Battle Ground residents about four years later.
A U.S. Navy veteran, Janssen was a nursery grower for much of his life. A master gardener, he specialized in growing conifers and shaping Bonsai trees. He enjoyed hiking, and loved art, especially sketching and painting.
Janssen was preceded in death by his son, Michael Janssen, father, Leonard Janssen, brother Michael Janssen, and brother-in-law and best friend, Paul Hargreaves. Survivors include his mother Fern Janssen of Vancouver, sister Sally Jones of Colorado, son Davin Janssen of Oregon and ex-spouse and business partner Diana Reecks of Battle Ground.
Hamilton-Mylan-Knapp-Gunderson, Vancouver, is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 11005 NE Hwy. 99, Vancouver, Thurs., March 1, at 6:30 p.m.

MARGARET JASMER
Margaret Jane (Stuedler) Jasmer, 80, died May 6, 2007, in Vancouver.
Jasmer was born June 28, 1926, at home in Ridgefield. She lived in Ridgefield, Camas and Battle Ground.
Jasmer loved her special kitty “Baby.” She enjoyed crocheting. She donated her crocheted caps to missionaries.
Jasmer was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Stuedler, in 1976, sister Anna Rose in 1999 and brother-in-law Fred Nickelson earlier this year. Survivors include sons Ronald Jasmer of Brush Prairie and David Jasmer of Ridgefield, sisters Mary Nickelson of Vancouver and Violet Napp of Oregon, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Davies Cremation & Burial Services was in charge of arrangements.

MARIE JAY
Marie Joyce (Rodden) May, 74, died Jan. 14, 2007, in Battle Ground.
May was born Aug. 9, 1932, in Battle Creek, MI, and lived in Clark County for 39 years, the past six years in Battle Ground.
May enjoyed camping, fishing and going to the beach. She also enjoyed antiques. May owned Ridgefield Pharmacy and Liquor for several years.
Survivors include daughters Kathy Chandler of Battle Ground, Patti Preston of Idaho and Karen Bishop of Montana, sons Fred Hodgkins of Battle Ground and Thomas Hodgkins of Vancouver, brother Bill Rodden of Oregon, 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
No services will be held, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.

WILLIAM JENSEN


William Emanuel Jensen, 85, died June 19, 2008, in Cheney.


Jensen was born Nov. 6, 1922, in La Center, and lived in Woodland, College Place and Cheney. He was an elder with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He had worked in the timber industry, and in farming.


Survivors include widow Gwen Jensen of Cheney, daughters Carolynn Bohlman and Melinda Blake, both of Cheney, Dianne Frost of California and Carmen Rima of Arizona, son William Brown-Jensen of California, sister Edna Craik of College Place, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.


Interment was at Mt. View Cemetery, Amboy, with the Cheney Funeral Chapel, Cheney, in charge of arrangements.


CHELSEA JOHNSON
Chelsea Johnson, 90, died March 2, 2007, in Bremerton.
Johnson was born April 22, 1916, in Halfway, OR. He graduated from Haines High School in Haines, OR in 1934, and lived in Oregon until the 1980s when he moved to Vancouver and later to La Center. He served in the Navy during World War II and was assigned to the USS Tulagi, USS Northhampton and USS Cuyama. He was aboard the USS Northhampton when Pearl Harbor was attacked.
After military service, Johnson worked as a carpenter. He worked on the Rock Island Dam in Wenatchee and the McNary Dam near Umatilla. He later moved to Salem, OR and did finish carpentry work until retiring in 1983.
Johnson became a photographer in the 1930s. He was an avid outdoorsman and fisherman, and had fly fished in many mountain streams. He built a wooden boat in 1956 which he used for salmon fishing. He loved to read about history, especially history of the northwest and World War II.
Johnson built his own home in 1992. He built furniture and created treasures on his wood lathe. He built apples boxes. He was an active member of the Orchard Society. He believed in natural foods and a healthy lifestyle. He grew his own vegetable garden, and raised honey bees, roses and dahlias.
After retiring, Johnson traveled throughout much of the western United States, visiting national parks.
Johnson was preceded in death by half-brother Carole Butts, brother Leon Johnson, and sister Ellena Gilbert. Survivors include daughters Myra Gates of Manchester and Floyce Midence of Seabeck, sisters Zona Willliams, Fern Glenn and Donna Arnold, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild and special friend Doris Cipra.
Services will be held Sat., March 10, 2 p.m., at Rill’s Life Tribute Center in Pt. Orchard, with burial at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent.

ESTHER JOHNSON
Esther Lorraine (Kimball) Johnson, 90, died May 30, 2008, in Vancouver. Johnson was born Feb. 7, 1918, in Becker County, MN. She married Charles Johnson in 1936 and moved to Vancouver in 1957. She lived in Clark County for 51 years. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Brush Prairie. She enjoyed making quilts, reading, gardening and jig saw puzzles. With the Bethel Women Quilters, she made quilts for missions in all parts of the world. Johnson and her husband enjoyed traveling and had visited many states, including Alaska. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Charles Johnson, son Stanley Johnson, and daughter Carolyn Hodgson. Survivors include son Arvid Johnson of Battle Ground, daughter Alice Olsen of Battle Ground, 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Viewing is set for Wed., June 4, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground. Funeral services will be held Thurs., June 5, 1 p.m., at Bethel Lutheran Church, 12919 NE 159th St., Brush Prairie, with interment at Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, Brush Prairie. LAURA JOHNSON
Laura Louise (Lehto) Johnson, 73, died Sept. 19, 2007, in Springfield, OR.
Johnson was born April 15, 1934, in Brush Prairie. She attended Battle Ground High School. She had lived in Oregon and California, and moved back to Clark County in 1990. She last lived in Battle Ground.
Johnson enjoyed watching golf and baseball, doing crossword puzzles and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed rooster figurines and other images of roosters.
Johnson had worked as a bar tender.
Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Johnson, in 1996, son William Carter Jr. in 2001, brothers Willy Lehto, Ken Lehto, Norm Lehto, Layt Lehto, Raymond Lehto, Milton Lehto and Bob Lehto, and sisters Mildred Puranen, Elma Andruss, Sylvia Harlow and Sharon Jaggers. Survivors include daughters Suzie Walling of Oregon and Vicki McDougald of Arizona, son D. J. Johnson of Battle Ground, sisters Gertrude Gustafson of Battle Ground, Dorothy Kay of Oregon and Neva Shelton of Goldendale, brother Nib Lehto, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held Sat., Sept. 29, 2 p.m., at the home of D.J. and Traci Johnson, 111 SW 17th Ave., Battle Ground. Cremation was handled by the Buell Chapel, Springfield, OR.

RUTH JOHNSON
Ruth Loraine (Dunning) Johnson, 89, died Sept. 16, 2007, in Vancouver.
Johnson was born Feb. 26, 1918, in Brush Prairie. She was raised most of her life in Battle Ground and graduated from Battle Ground High School in 1936. She married Harvey Johnson and lived in Amboy, Battle Ground and Ridgefield.
Johnson had a strong work ethic. She worked as a harvest picker and as a cannery worker. She was a secretary for the Washington State Patrol. She and her husband operated a dairy farm in Battle Ground, a mercantile store in Amboy, a movie Theater in Amboy, a towing and ambulance business, and then, with family members, the Steakburger restaurant in Hazel Dell. Johnson not only worked in the businesses, but also did the bookkeeping for each business they owned.
Johnson enjoyed traveling. She and her husband traveled around the western states in their fifth wheel. They had a second home in Mesa, Arizona.
Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Johnson in 1995, sister Violet Platt and brother Virgil Dunning and Harold Dunning. Survivors include daughters Merilyn Condon of Ridgefield and Wanda Stephens of Vancouver, brother Ernie Dunning of Ridgefield, five granddaughters, 11 great-granddaughters and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Mon., Sept. 24, 3 p.m., at Battle Ground Baptist Church, 1110 NW 6th Ave., Battle Ground, with reception to follow the services.

CHINE JONES
Chine Montgomery Jones, 44, died Oct. 27, 2006, in Brush Prairie.
Jones was born Oct. 8, 1962, in Lebanon, Indiana, and lived in Clark County for 33 years, including 10 years in Brush Prairie.
Jones attended Hockinson Community Church and the Brush Prairie Baptist Church men’s group. He was a volunteer fireman for Fire District 3. He coached baseball and umpired for the Highland Little League. He enjoyed hunting, camping, playing golf, traveling, tinkering with cars and helping people.
Jones worked as a service technician in the automatic door industry.
Survivors include widow Lindy Jones, at home in Brush Prairie, sons Kyle Jones, Clayton Jones and Jacob Jones, all at home in Brush Prairie, parents Harlin and Marsha Jones of Brush Prairie, brother Josh Jones of Portland, and sisters Jan Jones and Tracie Rouse, both of Brush Prairie.
Funeral services will be held Thurs., Nov. 2, 10 a.m., at Brush Prairie Baptist Church, Vancouver, with visitation Wed., Nov. 1, 6-8 p.m., at Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground.

DARRELL JONES
Darrell Frank Jones, 48, died in a quad accident May 3, 2007, near Vantage in Kittitas County.
Jones was born Sept. 16, 1958, in Portland, grew up in Portland, and served for 12 years in the U.S. Navy. He lived in Bonne Terre, Missouri for 15 years, and in Yacolt the last four years. He enjoyed hunting, golfing, fishing, motorcycles and recreational vehicles. He was a member of the Battle Ground Elks Lodge.
Jones worked as a truck driver, owning and operating his own truck.
Jones was preceded in death by brother Douglas H. Jones in 1981. Survivors include son Timothy Jones of Missouri, father Howard Jones and step-mother Bonnie Jones of Yacolt, mother Sharon Jones of Portland, sisters Denise Arnold of Portland and Stephanie Tulloch of Black Diamond, and one grandchild.
Memorial services will be held at a later date, with interment at Willamette National Cemetery. Steward-Williams Funeral Home of Ellensberg is in charge of arrangements.

WILLIAM JORGENSON
William Peter Jorgenson Sr., 80, died Nov. 21, 2007, in Camas,
Jorgenson was born May 28, 1927, in Toledo, WA, and lived in Camas the last four years.
Jorgenson served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He enjoyed hunting, salmon fishing, carpentry, playing the guitar and traveling.
Jorgenson had worked as a pot tender in the aluminum industry.
Jorgenson was preceded in death by his wife, Susie Jorgenson, in 1999. Survivors include daughter Judy of Vancouver, sons Larry Jorgenson, William Jorgenson Jr. and Roy Jorgenson, all of Vancouver, brother Delmar Jorgenson of Portland, sisters Florence Johnson of Vancouver and LaVerne Howe of Camas, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at Ridgefield Cemetery, with Layne’s Funeral Home, Battle Ground, in charge of arrangements.

PAULINE JUNCLAS
Pauline (Chaffin) Jungclas, 94, of Yacolt, died March 26, 2008, at home in Yacolt.
Jungclas was born March 12, 1914, in Virgil, OK. She worked as a telephone operator at the University of California at Los Angeles for over 20 years. She moved to the Salmon Creek area in 1987 and later to Yacolt.
Jungclas was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Jungclas. Survivors include nephew David Clark of Yacolt.
