Letter to the Editor: Ending transitional kinder program in La Center a mistake

Posted

Editor,

We are writing to express our deep appreciation for the exceptional transitional kindergarten (TK) program at La Center Elementary and to advocate for its continued funding. TK is a pre-kindergarten program for children who do not have access to high-quality early learning experiences prior to kindergarten and have been deemed by the school district to be in need of additional preparation to be successful in kindergarten.

As parents of current TK students, we have witnessed firsthand the incredible impact this program has had on our children’s development. Under the guidance of Sheena Davies, our children have thrived in an environment that fosters both academic growth and social-emotional learning.

Mrs. Davies and paraeducators Tracey Stimmel and Emily Perez are not just educators; they are dedicated mentors who go above and beyond to ensure that each child receives personalized attention and support. Their passion for teaching is evident in every lesson, activity and interaction. They create a nurturing atmosphere where children feel valued, encouraged and eager to learn.

The TK program at La Center Elementary plays a crucial role in preparing children for success in kindergarten and beyond. It provides a solid foundation in literacy, numeracy and critical-thinking skills, while also emphasizing important social skills such as cooperation, empathy and problem-solving. For many families in our community, this program serves as a vital stepping stone toward academic achievement and lifelong learning.

It is disheartening to learn that the TK program will end next year. Such a decision not only jeopardizes the educational opportunities of current students but also deprives future classes of the benefits that this outstanding program has to offer. Investing in early-childhood education is not just an expenditure; it is an investment in the future of our children and our society as a whole.

We urge Superintendent Peter Rosenkranz and the members of the La Center School District Board of Directors to reconsider their decision and prioritize the funding of the TK program. Every child deserves access to high-quality early education, and we owe it to our children to ensure that they have the resources and support they need to thrive.
